Build length for 2020

Yesterday I called the 800 number and when prompted added my production number for my 230i convertible and found that it was in production with an end production date of 6/20/19. Does anyone know how long a build takes from start to finish? 20 days seems long.
Also my USA delivery port is NYC. Does anyone know how long it takes from end of production to delivery at my Just north of Syracuse NY dealer ?

I think that is about right. I hope to have my production number tomorrow. And I was told 8-10 weeks for delivery. Previously I was told about five weeks for actual shipping which would make it about right. Just because it is supposed to end that day doesn't mean it starts today. I ordered on Friday and will be thrilled to have it by August 1st.

"Production time" probably includes scheduling all the components to be delivered to the final assembly factory.

Even though car bodies are baked after painting, they sit them of a shelf for a few days for them to completely dry before sending them down the assembly line. Plastic parts (bumpers, rocker panel trim, etc.) can't be baked, so they have to air-dry after being painted. Once the car starts down the assembly line, it's probably only a few hours until the finished car pops out the other side.

It takes about a month to get a German-built car delivered to the east coast states. That can vary, though. Cars wait at the factory until they have a train load. Then, they wait at the European port until they have a ship load ("ship" with a "p"). If there's a train ride for the car in the U.S., the same applies. Waiting for a truck is not that long, because trucks only carry a few cars. If your car is the last one on the train and ship, the transit time is shorter. If they're first in line, showing up the day after the previous train or ship departed, the transit time is longer.

My 535i has BMW Individual leather and wood trim. That supposedly delayed production. The car was ordered the first week in January 2014. It finished production on February 24th, and was at the dealership March 28th. Frau Putzer's U.S.-built X3 arrived exactly five weeks after being ordered.

The lead time for factory ordered cars is greater at the start of the model year. That's when dealers are ordering inventory. Car sales are slow in December, January, and February. That's because of weather and people being caught up in Christmas (or paying for Christmas). That makes those months good for negotiating a low price and for getting a factory ordered car quickly.

Thanks guys good info to know. Mine is (should) not be a complicated build so I am guessing maybe the 3rd week in July I can expect to put the top down. ...But then there is this 4th of July thing!

Here's an excellent link to what happens after you have placed your order up till it arrives at the dealership.

Enjoy: https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=894728

Hardest part of "building to order" is the waiting but the above link gives a good idea as you track your build. I've built to order all my Bimmers and the quickest was the X5, about 4 weeks, since it was built right here in SC. The longest was the E46 which was built in S Africa, took about 3 months.

That didnít take long at all before going into production stage. I waited almost a month before mine went into production which then took about 1Ĺ weeks as it started on a Wed or Thur. It took another almost 2 weeks waiting for the next ship, just missed the one to the West Coast by a day. Travel time to the West Coast is about a week longer than to the East Coast; so all told it took about 2Ĺ months from order to delivery.

Call me blown away. I ordered on Friday and mine now has a VIN and a scheduled completion date of 6-13....surely that is still a bit optimistic.

Indufan Where are you located? I went to MY BMW and can track my build. I have plates coming off my Ford at the end of the month but I don't think the 230i will be in by then so I am guessing that I will have to surrender my NY plates and get new ones. I've had these plates for a long time but they are not vanity plates so the DMV won"t hold them.

AndDown, I have a port named NYCPOA which refers to a pedicab organization on my build sheet? As I live in upstate NY what would be the port of entry for my (almost done building) vehicle? Is it NY or NJ? Yes I know I shouldn't be tracking it(every 5 min) and MY CA is giving me updates but the only will power I know races Indy cars!

Sorry Genod, really not familiar with which East Coast ports the carriers call at, only familiar with the one at Oxnard (Port Hueneme). Maybe one of the forum members might be able to give better information or do a forum search. I empathize with your anticipation, the hardest part is the waiting, but it's also fun to be able to track your carrier.

I did a little searching online and came up with this: the Port of New York and New Jersey is used by BMW and the vehicle prep center (VPC) is in Jersey City, NJ.

Still waiting (5 days) with the vehicle "awaiting a carrier assignment notice". Called today and was told yes it sometimes takes that long. By the way those ships that transport the cars can hold 75,000 vehicles!

I thought your production end date is next week? Awesome.

My end date is Thursday and I will still stuck on dot number 3.

I think your numbers are off by a factor of about 10.

FYI, thereís a current recall for the knee airbags resulting in cars being held up at the VPC waiting for parts from Germany. Hopefully both of your cars have the new airbag so it doesnít get held at the VPC. The wait is excruciating enough without having to wait further that your car is so close and yet so far from being delivered!

Maybe it all depends on the size of the ship for capacity.
"Car carrier ships are nautical workhorses of the industrialized world. Hauling up to 8,500 vehicles in a layer cake of 13 decks packed". I guess I was off by quite a bit.
It looks like the airbag situation might be why my vehicle is being held up. When I called the person on the other end checked and said there does not seem to be any reason for the delay. We shall see.
I am extending the ford lease for one month with the hopes I see the car in July!

Genod, when I was tracking my current 230i, I was able to do a search on the WW website to see which ships were scheduled for the East Coast and which for the West Coast. I'm not sure if that is still available as I recently visited their site and it now requires a bill of lading number. If I have the time when I'm on vacation in a couple of days, I'll try to search their web again. It's not uncommon to wait 10-14 days at Bremerhaven for a carrier.

AndDown,
My car is still stuck waiting for a carrier from the factory I believe it is a train ride to the port. I do have the marine ship tracking site so when I find out which ship it is on I will be able to track it via the Marine site. Don't waste your Vaca with my car. Please enjoy your time off.
