Tons of trouble updating maps on i3

I got a map update (2019-1 North america NEXT) and didn't need any code for it. The system didn't ask for a code and it installed and ran fine. SO far so good.

I ended up having my stereo and hvac control panel replaced by the dealer here in Houston last april.

I just downloaded the North america 2020-1 NEXT updated map and this time it needs a code. I tried to generate one from my VIN and my build date and neither worked. I ended up buying an FSC service on Ebay and got a few different numbers based on my VIN that I had e-mailed the seller and neither worked. He asked if the "head unit" had been replaced. I don't know if the "brains" are in the NBT display (original) or in the stereo/hvac (been replaced.) He said that I'd need to get the FSC from the car via e-sys and a cable.

I already had the cable and I also have bimmercode and the bluetooth dongle. I am having a ton of trouble getting the E-sys to connect. So.... ?

Can I get the FSC using bimmercode to generate a nav update code ? I have coded stuff for my car before and that seems perhaps more complicated.

I am working with E-sys 3.28 and see the list of "target" chassis, but it will not connect to my VIN. Using the launcher has me in a do-loop of generating tokens, as the "location" box is never populated with the installed location for E-sys.

Any suggestions of what I need to do in order to update my dang maps ???

TIA,
Richard
