X6 E71 / E72 (2008 - 2014)
The BMW X6 luxury crossover went on sale in April 2008 as a 2009 model year. BMW referes to the X6 as a Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) as it combines the attributes of an SUV (high ground clearance, xDrive and all-weather ability) with the stance, styling and roof line shape of a coupe. The E71 X6 was built off the E70 X5 (2007 - 2013) platform at BMW's Spartanburg, SC plant. Total worldwide sales were just over 235,000, sold mostly to the BRIC countries. US total sales was 34,082 vehicles.

How confident are you with your X6

After owing my 2011 50i X6 for a year now, I was wondering how confident others are with the reliability of this vehicle. My car had 42,000 miles on it when i bought it. Now I'm at 59,000 and the car has been in the shop 4 times. Twice for reduced power issues, once for the customer care package, and the last time for the aux turbo coolant pump (eng overheat message). Now after reading about battery issues and hp fuel pump issues, I am hesitant to take this car out of town, less i end up callling a tow truck to bring it to the shop again. How many miles do you have on your car, and how many times has your X6 had to go to the shop?

From my experience, X6 is good a vehicle, reliable - just the rear-view and blind spots are not very good. Had the car for 3 years and just did regular maintenance.

Mein Auto: 2009 X6 50i
2009 X6 50i bought with 47k on it a few months ago. It's been in the shop for valve cover gaskets, battery and expansion tank since purchase. I now have the ABS, DSC and brake light issue to deal with. I recently acquired the warranty service record and it's 8 pages long. This car spent more time in the shop than out during it's warranty period. I have zero confidence in it's reliability.

I'm not sure

Of course the full non recall recall done. 1 week in the shop. Extensive oil usage after that, all the gaskets and oil sensors replaced - another week cause they were not sure what was wrong. A broken transfer case - 1 week in the shop. If all this work would have been performed at the customers cost it would be close to 20 000 dollars. They told me I have basically a new car now. 2012 x6 , twin turbo engine. I can't imagine this would have to be endured by any car owner regardless of the economical status if it wouldn't be on warranty.

55k Miles, had my CCP done 3 weeks ago. Just got quoted today for up to $20k for the valve stem seal replacement. SA says the parts are really cheap but it's going to be a b***h to fix, 60hrs worth of labors. Mine eats up a quart of oil every 200 miles or so, blowing white smoke from the exhaust when I press the gas after long idles. And it makes a burning plastic smell as well. I'm out of warranty too

Anyone know a place in Houston that does it for cheap?

That sucks, sorry to hear.
just got my car back after CCP campaign.

I wonder if it's cheaper to try to find a rebuilt N63 and got it shipped to you and you ship your bad engine as core to them.
I know there is trans specialist on eBay doing something like that. the new rebuilt trans has 1-yr warranty usually.

I own an X6 3.5 2011. First BWM I bought. It was a dream come true. Great look, great to drive but it is the least reliable car I ever bought in my life. My dream is now a nightmere after everything that could broke; did. My dealer told me I was, last week, at my 35th visit to the dealer. All on warranty but so what. Sadly to say never a BMW again.

Bought 2011 X6 5.0 nine months ago from dealer as certified, 32000 miles, I had a X5 before, perfect upgrade, I enjoy every minute of driving this monster, was at service for minor issues, I recommend it to everybody !

My first Bmw. Reliability is zero. Went to the dealer 20 times for all sorts of problems. Name it; got it. At least, I love to drive it and the look is fabulous.

You guys are scaring me! The can't calibrate seat message appears when I shut off the engine. I've done the quick fixes people online have suggested but nothing works. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

My experience with BMW as far as seats-position, rear-view mirrors position, steering wheel position etc, which store in each key FOB is sometimes they just don't work. I have to hit the memory button on the seat to get mine back after my wife drives the car using a different key FOB. beats me why it sometimes work sometimes doesn't, never got a message saying can't calibrate the seats.

Many gremlins like this points to weak/old batt IMHO.

Traded in my wife's beloved '10 A6 for a new '14 X6 35i. Now have 16K. No major issues aside from the fact that the auto hi-beams sometimes work, mostly don't. We have the same problem with the seat memory. I'm constantly resetting when driving after my wife's had the car. She's 5-4 and I'm 6-4 so it's very aggregating to constantly have to reset the memory. Service said there's nothing wrong with either, go figure. One other gripe, the quality of the sound system is lacking considering it's a $72K vehicle. Don't think we would purchase another one. Might go back to MB next time.

You and me both, bud. 2012 X6 with around 25k miles. I thought that you couldn't go wrong with a BMW, now I'm getting worried. We just officially imported ours down to SW Florida as a snowbird car. It'll only get about 5k miles/yr, and the prospect of spending big bucks on it for repairs kills me.

I'm 5'6" and she's 5' and sits with the wheel on her boobs like some old lady. We have the same issue, the seats don't recognize the different fob's. Royal PITA

Our X6 has the premium sound system, which my gf didn't think she needed. Sounds pretty good. Maybe you don't have the higher-end sound system?

We have the premium sound system. Would have preferred B&O, bought the car off the lot from the dealer's inventory.

Just got hold of the service records for the vehicle.

- #6 plug and coil defective, were replaced when the vehicle was about a yr old
- Mass air sensor replaced at around 2 yrs old
- Auxiliary water pump replaced due to recall at around 3 yrs old

The rest were all maintenance-related.

absolute nightmare after 46k miles. see my post on the valve stem seals. I was told by the Service Manager at a large dealership not to own one of the 5.0L engines out of warranty - proven.
