Who's from Charlotte NC?

Just how fed up with no gas have you become? My wife and I are giving serious consideration to remaining here any longer. Three big downfalls with Charlotte for us. Vulnerability to local economy due to the city having all their eggs in one basket (Banks). Every time a storm hits 700 miles away we suffer gas shortages and spikes in prices. And finally at least a big one for me, the roads here suck...flat out suck. Clearly maintaining the roads in Charlotte is NOT a priority.

Im by Lake Norman and have had alot of difficulty finding any gas so far. No Premium, no mid-grade, and barely any 87. I checked 10 stations last night and nothing except police blocking the pumps. This was at 12am.

I think you forgot to mention taxes in this state as well. I havent lived in a state that had so many or so high. (High property, car tax, food tax, income tax, etc etc). But I guess its for the schools and the roads (!?!?!?!?) At least thats what I keep hearing.

I hear you. Very little gas in Atlanta as well, and if you find any it's regular grade. It gave me the opportunity to test 87 octane in my 2008 328, which I never would have done in ordinary circumstances.

I found that my mileage is about the same (right at 20 MPG 90% city) and I can detect maybe a small amount of performance loss, but it's hard to tell.

It's unbelievable how you guys are still without gas for what wasn't even a huge storm and yet you go a bit north to VA and MD and they have no issues - how hard is it to truck some gas around, it all makes no sense to me!

Maybe considering Scottsdale.

We live in a very nice part of Charlotte called Southpark. But wow have things gone for the worse in the past 6 years. The city just doesn't have their $hit together. This morning while out looking for gas (which we didn't find) the city had street crews putting those wires in the road that detect your car and change the traffic lights, well they made us drive over the area they were working on through this sloppy gray $hit that smelled like bondo. When we got home my Nissan truck sides and wheel wells were covered in splattered epoxy that will not come off. I made calls and the city's risk management dept. is sending out a claim form. I guess it could have been the new 335i. But it just as easily could have been, this city is so very ill prepared and managed.

I moved from Scottsdale to Charlotte. And if I could, I would return immediately. I loved it out there. Good place to move to.

Here's my 2 cents:

I went to UNCC back in the late 60's and early 70's. It was a nice small city. Since then it has grown too fast, has not kept pace with the growth, hence the streets and other infrastructure have suffered.

The current gas crisis is a direct result of the southeast US being the only locale without a large fuel storage facility and one of the highest growth rates as well as gasoline use per capita.

The Wachovia situation is also going to hurt.

yeah.. lets not even start with the wachovia situation...the city has so many things going a miss here makes me wonder if they will get any one to replace a wachovia. I know citi is heading their retail banking here but not the investment bank which is where a lot of the money was coming from. High taxes keeps companies from coming. No companies or people and that yields no personal taxes to pay the city to improve. Just not sure. If you don't mind me asking....Scottsdale....what kind of companies are in Scottsdale?

Hi 2000se,
I have no idea what companies are in Scottsdale, I am self employed now and do a small amount of consulting on the side. We can live anywhere we want to, I just want to make the right decision, we thought Charlotte was it, appears not. We are disappointed.

Wow, I was up in Charlotte trying to escape the mess in FL last week. I had thoughts of moving there also but now I'm looking at going to Chapel hill. My wife is in banking and that was why we were looking at Charlotte but all hell has been unleashed and it looks like my more positive opportunity is in CH. Anyone have input on that ?

Bryce, back in the very early '70s I was going to school in western Pennsylvania. Driving home to Largo for spring break, I can remember driving through Chapel Hill and thinking "this is the most beautiful little town I have ever seen." That memory has stuck with me ever since, and if the place is half as nice as that memory from long ago, it seems that it would be a damn nice place to live. Probably worth checking out.

I lived in Chapel Hill as a graduate student on 2 different occasions. Awesome university town, good people, close to Raleigh and Durham. Living in the town proper is quite expensive due to lack of housing and pressure from students. However, within 25 miles of Chapel Hill there are lots of nice places to live.

you dont like the roads down there, try moving up north to MA . I'm moving back to greensboro in a few months. I love the roads down there compared to up north. and the weather down there is a plus too, minus the problems you guys are going through now.

I'm from Maine, where the roads are even worse. I managed to find Midgrade in Greenville (school) yesterday, so naturally today there was premium (for $4.10). It fits right in with the rest of my present impressions of Greenville. Unless you can see a big puddle called the atlantic, the entire southeast sucks, IMO.
