I think is less than a dealer would get for it on the lot, that was likely a $70,000 car new.

It's the low end of private party sale value, 3-4 grand over trade-in/wholesale. If it's been a good car and he likes it, it's a better choice than leasing again if he can somehow get it down to around $41-42,000.
