2013-2015 2.0 328 ix issues?

Getting ready to buy my 16 year old daughter a 320 or 328 x drive. Any issues I should be aware of with any of these years? Engine issues or expensive maintenance items I should be prepared for with 60,000 + mile car? 2015 is probably the newest I can afford right now. Thanks a bunch! Jeff

I have a 2015 320i with 65k or 66k miles. No issues for me. A couple of other high mileage (as in more miles than mine) 3 series owners have commented that they haven't had any issues with their cars.

I think the pre-2015 models had issues with the timing chain, but that's been corrected I think. Maybe someone else can confirm that. Also, I was talking to a service advisor and he told me this generation is pretty reliable, and the one thing to keep an eye on is the "oil filter housing gasket" or something like that.

I have a 2014 328i with 77k miles and no problems. A few pre 2016 cars have had timing chain problems. Most have not. Do you absolutely need awd? If not skip it and save some money and repair work.
If this is a car to go off to college you may want to look at Toyota and Honda cars as well.

Reason it would not be a good college car? I do all my own mx and she may only be an hour or so away from home

The awd transfer case has been troublesome for a few owners on this forum. My experience sending three kids to school was that well made non-complex cars worked best. The BMW should be fine but I would stay away from awd unless it is really needed. It's one more thing to maintain and possibly fail.

we sent our daughter to college in a 2002 330i and later our son in a 2009 328i ...... the cars are very safe, like being well dressed the BMWs helped cast a nice "image" , bolstered self confidence, and both kids took good care of their cars.

Go for it!

If it came down to a 2015 328i vs a 2016 320i I would go for the 320i, because of the timing chain issue. I can't recall if all 2015s had the timing chain issue rectified or if it was partway through the 2015 model year. The issue is with plastic chain guides that fail. Before failure the motor makes a pretty distinctive whine, so keep an ear out for that. Other than that the N20 motor has proven pretty reliable. I'm a fan of the 320i, because it has just enough power to be quite fun and you can actually use all of its power. It also has all the power a new driver needs. The 328i has more power than can be used at legal speeds.
