Eerie Howling Noise on X3

Hey everyone,

My 2005 X3 recently started making this eerie howling noise. I have a notion that it is some form of bearing that is worn, but am not too sure. I took a video of the sound when driving today and posted it to youtube here :

If anyone knows the cause of this sound please let me know...

Thanks!_a_

Check your DISA valve.

Sounds like it might be your oil seperator. You can check pretty easily by pulling the oil filler cap off when the engine is idling. Cover the opening lightly with your palm. There should be a light vacuum. If there is a strong vacuum and/or the noise gets louder that's what it is. Just search "chewbacca sound" or "oil seperator".

Anyone know what this sound is in the video? (You may have to turn up the volume.) It's only when driving. (VC and oil cap have been replaced on mine, with OEMs).

Not a compressor-like warbling sound. More eere and varying with speed; no sound when sitting still.

Just did a sound-test at five points. On mine, looks to be the _new_ center support bearing! :-(

Iím if the CCV camp.

Remove the drive belt and run it to certainly remove any belt driven item from the list.

You drove over Chewbacca!

It is a definite vacuum problem sound - like DISA valve or crankcase problem

Is it engine speed, engine load, or vehicle speed dependent?

Too much "warbling" in his sound. And the really big thump-thump driving over him would be telling.

It's the CSB for mine. IDK for the long-gone OP, but likely the same I'd guess due to the very similar sound. Would be interesting to know if he/she/they had work done to his/her/their driveshaft beforehand.

This sounds a lot like the issue I am having with my 2008 X3. Ever since I had the rear drive shaft replaced it has made an intermittent whistling noise that changes pitch based on the speed I am driving. It only makes the noise when driving and seems to be louder when car is cold and softer when the car is warm. My mechanic checked the new drive shaft, to include the new center support bearing, and claimed it looked ok. How did you determine it was the new center support bearing? How did you test it? The sound is driving me crazy. Thanks for your help.

Just finished the installation and test drive. New, OEM center support bearing cured the problem.

Probably CCV Valve as mentioned.

Google "Xoupost BavarianE39 CCV Mod".
I did this and did not regret bc it reduces my oil consumption from 1qt/400 miles to nothing.
Also prevents hydrolock.

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

P.S. The seller of the original, non-OEM part made good on his warranty.
