What did you do to your E83 X3 today?

Don’t know whether to be excited about this or not. I won’t be doing the work myself...

For those curious in regards to the TPMS on the X3..

I swapped my winter tires on the X3 and after 3 days the tire pressure light came on.. I knew one was bad but this was awfully quick. Anyways noticed the valve was somewhat screwed I decided to take the tire in and get valve swapped. The boys at the tire shop of course tell me that’s a TPMS valve and it’s gonna be $$. Mind you these rims are some older e53 rims that I got off local classifieds. Needless to say I told them just put a regular valve in, they tell me I’ll have a dash light to which I told him don’t worry.

I recall reading that the x3 the TPMS doesn’t use the sensors but actual ABS and wheel rotations but wasn’t sure. Well after the valve was replaced I reinstalled the wheel it reinitialized the TPMS by holding the button till the light turns and the driving until the light went off and hasn’t come on. So for those wondering our X3s don’t use the sensors in the wheel. This was on my 08 X3.

Well it's been a super long time since I've been on the forums cause....I actually got a job that I wanted Otherwise before, I've been working at jobs I disliked Moved from Cincy to Stafford, VA


So my new job is keeping me busy and I just don't have much time for vehicle work in general but that's ok since my Bimmer is a rock solid daily commuter....I still got to change that lifetime tranny fluid.

I believe the 2004-2006 use the abs/wheel rotation method and the LCI (07-10) use the Tpms sensors.

I would hazard a guess that since you disabled one of the sensors it’s just not factoring in that sensor.

So to complicate matters.

The OEM rims that came with my X3 use the old school rubber valves. Blue arrow as per the pelican article. I know the TPMS works with these rims from day one since I got the vehicle.

These e53 rims or whatever bmw they came off have the aluminum valves as per the article. I also asked at the tire shop for the TPMS sensor back I can provide a picture of it.

I am still not convinced that my 08 X3 uses the wheel sensors. Easy test, I’ll let air out of that rim I had the valve replaced and see if it triggers a light..

I vaguely recall that the new TPMS system was implemented inline - not at model year start. Perhaps some of the early 08's used the old system?

Or perhaps Canadian market X3s received them separately...

I’ve had my tires off so I know mine has sensors.

It's quite possible that the Canadian market used the older system since Tpms was a U.S. mandated system that year.

Last Sunday my top radiator hose burst off, so naturally I replaced the water pump, thermostat, and installed another hose.
Filled it up with a garden hose and decided to drive it a couple days to make sure no leaks.

Today I realized temperatures were starting to dip below freezing, so it was time for some BMW blue coolant, and a flush.
Upon removing the front underbody tray to drain the coolant, I couldn't help but pick at the metallic flakes coming off of the subframe.

Naturally, because I must've had OCD in my past life , I decided to spend a couple of hours chipping all the rust flakes off with a chisel, wire brushing, sanding, and painting it.
I wish I had taken a before picture, but I'm quite happy with the result:

(oh, and I finished the coolant flush too )

Cleared P1447 on SWMBOs X3

Good thing I didnt give my spare DTML pump away to Duke.

(This one has been coming on about once every 3 years and never during NY state inspection.)

You are missing a plastic cover plate on the aluminum subframe bracing plate.

Its probably been missing since its first oil change in 2006.

I am assuming you applied that with a brush?

Just came inside from giving the X3 a interior cleaning & vacuuming in the garage. Probably the last time this gets done until spring time as the cold weather is rolling in hard here in the East. I'm gonna try to also get in a wax before its get too cold but its gonna be tough.

Pulled off the shift boot and washed it down and applied some PERL on it we'll see how it holds up. Really wish I could refresh all the exterior black trim on it to give it that fresh new look.

Finally got around to doing something I've been meaning to for 7 years: install a hitch. Every time we take it to FL I can't use it to pull the boat, and now that we have a newest addition and all his accouterments, a rear luggage rack or bike rack will become invaluable on trips to FL or OBX. I bought a Curt class 3 off amazon on sale for $109, free shipping. Directions said 3-4 hours for expert and 6-8 for novice... they must have that based on Millenials having to update social media during the process, because it took me an hour. I did it while changing the trans oil in the wife's MK6 Jetta between the test drive and cool down for final fluid check (the Aisin trannies don't have a fill plug, only a drain plug, so the process is even more convoluted than on our cars). Hardest part was getting the rear bumper cover firmly clicked in. There was 40 minutes elapsed time between the first picture and the second to last picture.

I was even able to salvage the hitch pop out, though it did need some careful trimming (not cutting it into two pieces) to fit around the hitch sleeve and safety chain loops.

Haha took me 2 hours to install the factory BMW one but half an hour of that was trying to plug the light module in because the connector is right at the very end of the reach of my finger tips and there's no line of sight so I had to line it up by feel when I could only just barely touch it, and another half hour trying to figure out where I was supposed to plug in the trailer mode module to the ecu wiring harness (right behind the back seat under a cover forward of the compartment with the tools and battery! FYI). On the up side, that's where I found the hold-down sliders for the cargo rails sitting!

It was some Tremclad semi-gloss rust paint I had sitting in the basement.
This was a completely ad-hoc project.
