is 15 a good year for the X1?

Or step up to gen 2?

Saw a decent used deal for a 2015 and wondering is it's worth considering. $19k, 40k miles. 28i Yes/no?

$19k seems high. What options? I bought a pretty loaded '14 xDrive28i last winter for 11k (with hhigher mileage, but in really nice shape).

That's a good price, at least for me it would be. That's actually a bit under what that model year and mileage would sell for in western Canada (not counting any options it may have, you didn't list any).

Just did a quick search and Thereís a 35i mSport with 31,000 miles going for 17k in you area. (Premier Automotive) So I would say no. I paid more than that for mine but it still had some warranty left. Makes me want a second one.

Yea, I'd be all over that 11k! (/me hating any sort of car payment!)

I think you're in the N20 engine grenade zone with that one though!

I didn't want to get into this topic, but since we're there now: potential issue that's blown way out of proportion.

A very small percentage of N20s have failures related to timing chain guide failure. Many owners have been able to work with BMW to either get subsidized repairs or trade-in value for new vehicles. Some owners don't get anything because they're jerks to the dealers and BMW corporate.

TBH though, it's not a massive issue (not even on the same street as the N54 HPFP problem).

One of our BMWs is an e84 3.5 MSport [2013 - 44,000 mi] .

It's been trouble free for the most part. With the 19" staggered RFTs the ride is a bit harsh but on the flip side it handles well. It is a bit on the small side (that is sometimes a plus - other times a minus). Being the end of the model year most of the bugs are worked out too. On the other hand, the tech is slow - esp compared to our G30.
Moving to the F48 '16 and newer X1s gives you a bit more room but it's loosely based on the MINI chassis and some have found that a negative.
Lastly - even if the maintenance records are complete and it's been well cared for the price seems a bit high - but you are in a "high price market" [DC] for used cars.
Bargaining opportunity for you?!?

The gen 1 is better IMO as it is more car like. Smaller inside but it's built on a RWD 3 series chassis and not on a FWD chassis ( mini I think?)

I prefer the Gen 1 35i variant. Awesome power, good fuel economy (IMO). Price does seem high for a 28i... even though I still owe 19k on my 14 35i (bought CPO low mileage in 2017, 2.5 more years on loan).

+1 on the fuel economy of the 35i, even better on the 28i.
BMW did a fantastic job on these two engines to deliver power and fuel efficiency for it's time.

Has anyone here spent some time in both the E84 and the F48?

Iíve had a F48 as a rental for a week. It was stripped down option wise, so I canít make a equal comparison, because there were no sport seats, idrive screen was tiny, etc. There is more leg room in the back seat, and having the back hatch power open was nice. Visibility out the back window though is poor. I would also like ability to stow the spare tire that is available in there as well.

When I returned to my X1, hitting the throttle for the first time and settling into the sport seats, I was like oh yeah, this is how it should be.

I had an F48 loaner. Had I never owned my E84 I can honestly say I would have been perfectly happy with one. But now I could not give it the slightest consideration.

I drove the F48 on a BMW autocross event , was not impressed with handling. it was a x2 xdrive. way more body lean than my M sport e84.
