What A Porsche Panamera Turbo Costs In India Is Beyond Absurd

WOW! We are spoiled!

Quote:
I say this because while Porsche sells the new Panamera Turbo at around $151,000 here in the United States, the Panamera starts at a touch over $294,000 in India.

India has ~100% tariffs on imported cars.

I recall a while ago an Indian cricket campion was awarded a new Ferrari as a promotion. The cricket campion was all smiles, until he realized he owed 120% in tax. A lot of fans made a big stink, and the government ultimately decided to wave the tax and let him have the car.

This is like this in most of S Asia, they are trying to keep peoples money on local stuff.
ALL imports have a heavy tax.

(I can't talk about India) BUT in Sri Lanka the same applies, about 100% duty

YOU do see people driving in Porsche's, Ferrari's, and they are STINKING RICH
People with those cars NEVER get pulled by the cops, they usually have connections and all kinds of bribe money.
In Europe I had a Porsche and could have afforded a Ferrari and I am/was in no way rich.

In countries like this the $ gap between the destitute and the RICH is massive.

It's sad that a man can go out and buy a car for nearly 200 grand and yet his brother/sister is eating left over food thrown into a dumpster,
that is fcuking obscene

I know Denmark will at least match that - if not beat it.

Of course, you get free healthcare, daycare, higher education etc. in return for the hefty pricetag and your hefty income tax. I'm not sure what you get in return in India.

Exactly. Paradise on Earth it is not.

Add this to the long list of reasons to avoid it (and I am not talking about the Panamera Turbo).

The Russian Ural motorcycles are BMW knock-off's. China makes BMW knock-off motorcycles, too.

Back in WWII, the U.S. Army was having problems with their H-D motorcycles standing up to the sand and heat in North Africa. They'd captured some German BMW R71 motorcycles, and sent them Harley-Davidson, saying "Build us some of these, they work better here." Harley-Davidson only built a few, and they're very valuable now.

It looks like quite a few countries have a 100%+ tax on cars, or luxury cars. Who knew.

The MSRP for a base 440 gran coupe in Germany is the equivalent of $59,200 while in the US its $48,300. Sure there may be some option differences wrapped up in the base between the different specs but still a 22% premium relative to the US price. Consider other things like fuel and owning/leasing a luxury car here is comparatively quite affordable.

Who wants a Porsche there anyways. You can't drive it anywhere, with bad roads and traffic. Maybe just as a show piece !

That's actually not true,
Although I have not been to India, Sri Lanka is very similar.
The last time I was there was about 12 years ago and some of the road are better than Toronto.
Canadian roads and highways when compared to what we get taxed is disgusting.

There was a highway section being built last I was there and my cousin reports to me through facebook.

They regularly have "supercar", yes Supercars, lambos, ferraris etc races through the streets of Columbo.

You can't race a supercar through Toronto !

Yes out in the sticks it's different, but the types of people who HAVE that money live in the city,
in condo's and they drive on better roads than we do,

LOLZ

you might wanna check this out
it's a total rubbish what some "westerners" think ,
back home, folks no longer live in mud huts, eat bananas and run naked through the streets.
Although I'm sure some do,
Majority of folks, live in condo's, have iphones, watch MTV, have cars, even supercars
and if you think of the feat of buying and maintaining a supercar on wages that are substantially
lower (with regards to the countries economics) especially as we have found out about the
extortionate taxes paid (and bribes) put a lot of people to shame.
True that there is a **** load of poverty too.

btw The people racing are "locals" not foreigners

Bear in mind that Toronto is bigger than most US cities.Traffic moves faster there than the NY Manhatten traffic.Over all Canadian roads on major cities are no worse than in the US . Try driving route q0 through LA.Traffoc loads and winter weather take their toll everywhere. BTW TRAFFIC Colombo SL is not heavy but the drivers slow up progress plus CATTLE...

I will not politicize this too much, but the reason the US has had such a strong middle class was the lack of such ridiculous tariffs. The cost of living here is relatively low compared to other Western countries. Imagine if the US had tariffs like these for many years. Would we be able to get quality vehicles from Germany and Japan? Would domestic manufacturers have ever gotten serious about quality? The UAW would be a billionaires boys club. This would be a Pontiac or Oldsmobile board.

This also shows the potential economic power of the US. If a particular country pisses us off too much (I'm looking at you, China!) we can play the tariff game too. Our allies or domestic operations (in some industries, not most) would rush to fill the void, however it would be inflationary and could cause a recession.
