Digital Audio Broadcasting - DAB - Norway shuts down FM

If you think the 3G/4G TCU backfit was a stinker, just wait on DAB. A auto adapter costs NKr1500. The US has only "expressed interest."

I don't understand why FM has to be turned off if DAB is in use.

Three main reasons for switching to DAB vs FM are cost of operation (FM transmitters require more power and maintenance), signal quality and bandwidth (number of radio channels).

Norway has a ton of mountians. When FM signals are bounced around in valleys, they cause interference, and poor radio reception. The alternative is to allocate wide frequency ranges per allocated channel, but it severely limits number of channels being able to broadcast on 88-108MHz FM band.

With DAB, signals are broadcasted on multiple frequencies per channel, with different modulation. It results in interference actually I improving signal quality. (Simplified animation here: http://forskning.no/media-teknologi-...talradioen-dab , click play button below for next image)

FM will be turned off to save operation costs and free up frequencies for other uses. The topic has been politically hot, but long term effects outweigh the drawbacks.

Not going to happen anytime soon in the USA. Two reasons - too much legacy hardware, and satellite radio/streaming already serve those wanting the latest and greatest.

It's a change that the whole world could use, it's just tough to get rid of everything existing that still works. We're running out of frequency bandwidth, and I would love to see FM radio pushed out in favor of long range WiFi. http://whitespaces.microsoftspectrum.com/

It's just like the comparison between fiber optic internet and 40 yr old Comcast copper. In measures of performance, there's hardly a contest. But there's also the point that copper still works just fine, so what's the incentive to replace it?
