HiFi vs HK

Hey guys, in my country the HiFi costs like $500 and the HK about $1100 and it requires Live Cockpit Pro for $3k, so it's about a $4k upgrade. Im guessing the HiFi is the better option considering the price gap, correct?

Would go have a listen in person. In the e90 the difference was less noticeable than in the F30, to my ears. Not sure how the two compare in the G20.

I have the none HK and it's TERRIBLE. Just awful.

In the US its about a $900 upgrade. It has to be better. Anything is better than the stock system.

Here in Bulgaria it's not the stock, you pay for the HiFi and the HK. Will have to check in the showroom I guess.

Agreed! The HK is available as a separate upgrade in Canada and I've gone for it every time.

I agree with the others. I have the non-HK and it isn't great. Coming from a B&O setup in an A4 B9, this is downright pathetic. Even the HK (which I listened to yesterday in another 330i) wasn't anywhere as good as the B&O in the Audi. Slightly better than the ordinary Hifi system for sure. But yes.

I think it depends on you. If you are an audiophile, you need a high quality system; if you mostly listen to talk radio it doesn't matter. In between becomes an issue of how much you appreciate good music and how the extra cost factors into your purchase.

Agreed. In the States, the HK add-on isn't worth the price. The bass is muddy. The highs are mellow.

As mentioned above, Audi does awesome things with the B/O upgrade.

The problem is that the B&O system is expensive--very expensive. If you spend a huge amount of time in your car and want the best sound possible, it may be a good idea. If on the other hand, you drive an average amount of time and can put up with reasonable HK sound, that may be a better way to go. If you care to spend money on a B&O audio setup, I would look into their home systems instead.

I totally agree with you. Except I was talking about the B&O system in my A4 B9 which was a $950 addition (H-K is $875 for the 3 series). That B&O sounded so much better than the H-K in the bimmers. But again. Someone else might like the H-K in the Bimmer over the B&O in the A4. Itís all subjective.

The HK in my older BMW doesn't sound any better than the basic radio in our Maxima. I didn't think it worth the money for the uprated HK in the M340i I ordered.

I think that more cost effective option is to order HiFi and replace factory speakers with Bavsound stage 1 kit or ETON BMW speaker set (100% plug and play). If you're in the US, then Bavsound is easily available. If you'r ein the EU, then ETON speakers are the way to go.

I've replaced all mid and tweeter speakers in my G20 with ETON speakers and it's a really big improvement over factory HiFi speakers. Sound is much clearer, more natural, and even has a decent kick in mid-bass range. Most importantly it doesn't fall apart when you crank the system up above 60-70%.
Total cost of ETON set is less than 400Ä (including shipping). This upgrade replaces the center speaker (mid+tweeter) front door (mid+tweeter) and rear door (mid) speakers.

To point out to the US posters. In most territories BMW has 3 levels of stereo. Base, HiFi, and HK. In the US the HiFi system is standard equipment and HK is the upgrade.

The OP can get what is the US base system for $500 or the HK system for like $4k because they need another package as well.

OP, from the sounds of it you weren't planning on getting the Live Cockpit Pro so in your case I would do what Calamari proposed. Get the HiFi system and then get an after market plug and play system.

The main reason to get the HiFi system is because it has more speakers and an Amp over the base system which has no separate amp last time I checked.
