So my car got keyed

I park at a local park and ride (~400 spaces) and then commute to work. When my car was eight days old I got back to a badly mangled front bumper, broken headlight, etc. Today it crossed 1400km and I returned to one side entirely keyed!

Pictures don't do it real justice but somebody really went to town on it! The parking spaces are on the tighter side there but I backed in perfectly straight and dead centre in my space. What gives!?

Oh, major bummer!

A similar thing happened to my biz partner's 5er a few months ago. Basically, while his wife was shopping, someone took a key and went up and down both sides of the car. The person was clearly being malicious, as opposed to, you know, the more typical case of it being an "accident" (uh huh, yeah, uh, right) because of a key "accidentally" hanging out of their pocket (cough) while walking an inch from the side of the car without hearing or feeling anything. This person was "careful" to key every single body panel on the car so they all had to be replaced or re-painted.

I don't know the mindset of these people. Maybe it's a teenager who thinks it's funny. Maybe someone who just lost their job and they're pissed. I dunno. But it's sad, really. Obviously sad for the car owner. But sad that the person who keys can't figure out how to be a winner in life.

Sad dude. Very sad for you.

That really sucks...hate to see that. Obviously, this was intentional. Do you know if there were any other cars keyed in the same lot?

I guess you'll never know why someone keyed it, but I've been a victim of it twice. A girl keyed my car on both sides because she thought it was her cheating boyfriends' car. Luckily I caught her in the act and called the police. The 2nd time, I was parked in an end spot at a park-n-ride and somebody drew a penis on my passenger door with their key. They also made a few additional drawings on other people's cars.

Again, sorry to hear about the keying. It will require a repaint to fix those defects. Don't really bother with touchup paint; it won't look much better, if even any better at all.

I know how much of an accident these things can be. I have actually had it happened to my car. Culprit? Me! I had my keys sticking out of my back pocket and was squeezing between two cars in the garage. There was enough ambient noise to cover the sound and I really didn't feel anything.

Thankfully I dragged my ass along the beater instead of my new, at the time 3 week old, fresh from the dealer, 2003 Passat wagon.

Now, as for the OP's pictures, no way that was accidental.

Very sad... I feel bad for people who are such "haters" that this is how they express themselves. If it's any consolation, take pride in the fact that you are able to move forward and not allow them to dictate your life. I do not imply that it will be easy but you will have better character for doing so.

The only person you HAVE to lay down with at night, is yourself. If your conscience is clear, you will have no problem doing so.

That's F'd up! So sorry it happened. It's one of my worst nightmares and I'm disgusted to see it happen to anyone. I can't imagine how a person could do that to someone's car. I remember as kid's, my friends and I were always respectful of people's cars, and especially of those cars that were well taken care of as obviously yours is.

I used to park my 1979 BMW 320i at a train parking lot, unfortunately. It was broken into to steal the lousy Blaupunkt stereo. They ripped back my sunroof, broke the driver side window, and destroyed my dash. Not a happy memory.

Indeed! No public lot should be w/o surveillance, if only to protect themselves from a negligence suit. Uh.....OP? Are you there?

But self defense is very very good. Some dash cam mfg's offer more than one camera and a park mode - when nearby motion's detected, it records. Mighta caught OP's Perp, and the plate number of the horse he rode in on!

I'm not sure if there are cameras there. I'll check tomorrow when I park there for work. I think not, but even if I'm wrong, not sure they'll be willing to help. Dash cams wouldn't have caught the perp in action since it is entirely to one side of the car. It would've caught a person near the car but no way to prove the car hadn't been keyed already. It does suck. I figure I'm out a couple of grand here. No point in going through insurance since they just got my car fixed from the last time. To make my day a wee bit worse, I bought a non-Apple cable from the gas station. I figured at $5.95 it's not a bad deal even if my car doesn't recognize it. Well, turns out the piece of **** doesn't work at all! Lol

Anyway, here are a couple more snaps that show the scratch a lot better. It basically runs all the way from the taillight to just under the side mirror. It's far too deep and looks quite purposeful to just be a random act of a miscreant. Still not sure what I did to anybody to warrant this.

Sorry to hear that. I just don't understand some people and what they think they're accomplishing by doing such acts. My rear door got dinged a few weeks ago and took paint out down to the primer. I was at a golf course, parked next to an Infiniti M45, and the owner of the vehicle didn't have the integrity to leave a note. It could have been some other car, but I looked at my car, from certain holes on the fairway, and saw the same car for most of the day.

Not as bad as yours, but I couldn't live with touchup paint or having that blemish on my car. So I decided to fix it right and had a body shop patch, sand, prime, paint, and blend to adjacent panels.

Before:

After - They did a great job, but with body panels, you can't spot paint, you have to blend the color to adjacent panels to make it seamless. The job on two doors totaled $700, but I wasn't happy with the body shop's detail work to polish the paint and match the shine and color depth to adjacent panels, so I spent another $250 to get my professional detailer to buff and polish it right.

That hurts me just to look at. My first thought is it was vandals who wanted to mess up something because they couldn't afford it.

Terrible, very sorry.

But half a day at a reputable body shop she'll be as good as new.

Thank you, all. I appreciate the kind words, support, and encouraging stories. I'll keep everybody posted as this develops but as of now it seems it'll require a repaint of both doors and the quarter panel.

There are some terrible sick people out there. I wonder what this person was trying to achieve by keying your car. For sure has some issues...

Well, stuff happens....don't worry too much and what has been done is over. Try to look at the positive side and get the car fixed. If you find the right shop, you car will be as good as new! Be picky in choosing a good shop.

How could this happen in Canada? It's only supposed to happen in America.

Jealousy may be a small contributing factor but it's mainly a sign of mental illness. Only crazy people do that. I see a Maserati and I don't want to scratch it even if the owner got his money by fraud or selling cocaine. If I see a 16 year old with a Porsche, I don't think of keying.

Mr. Canuck can sleep well knowing that he is the better man. He doesn't key cars.

I heard that French people don't stick political bumper stickers to avoid vandalism.

I hope my car won't be keyed because a Canadian thinks my car is American owned or (very unlikely) an American thinks my car is Canadian owned. My car has subtle hunts of being from Canada and the U.S.

I feel your pain.

I've had a similar experience a couple of years ago.

Get it sorted and move on. No sense in dwelling on such stuff. Life happens.
Good luck.

I had a blue 2001 325i. We were outside BBQ'N and the kiddos were playing in the yard n driveway. I come around the car telling them to go back to the yard. There I see my son, is "painting" on my e46 with a rock..... he was 2 Year Old so I couldn't really be mad at him. Kinda funny looking back now.

Awful! Your car is still as new and now has suffered two destructive events while parked at the same location.

Not to place blame onto you at all, PC, but have you another car that could be your part-way commuter? Or use a different way to get to the train station - if not far, maybe a bicycle?

In any case your pretty black Beemer cannot be left there ever again unless maybe with an installed charge capacitor system capable of treating anyone who touches the car either with bare skin or wih a conductor (key) to a zap of more than 20,000 volts. For backing-into-your-car events the car needs a system of proximity sensors able to set going a siren emitting at least 150 decibels.

We cannot continue to allow such as this to happen to our Jet Black cars!!
