2004 Z4 newbie question. All you do is whine!

My Z runs fine but when I start it up in the morning I get a loud whine from this part and I have no idea what the part is and it's function. Here is a vid. It will whine for about a minute then quits and the car runs fine. It's embarrassing and I'd like to fix it.

Iím pretty good at finding that info in the online catalog... but just couldnít locate after about half hour of searching....

Iíd just go to your local BMW dealer and ask what the part is and price... after that you can go back into the catalog and see if you can locate it. Just make sure you ask under which subsystem it falls under.

Online catalogs: BMW fans.info and realoem.com

Just input the last 7 digits of your VIN

It's the emissions air pump. It only runs for a minute or so when the engine is cold to provide extra oxygen to the CATs while the cold idle mixture is still set rich, then it shuts off.

This is the part: http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E8...trol_air_pump/

Keep scrolling. There is some sort of one-way check valve in that system which needs to be checked and/or replaced. If it's bad, it allows water/condensation to enter the pump which ruins the pump. I've never done it but I recall some thread on the issue.

By the way, I have a used one from a 2005 3.0i (removed at about 30,000 miles) which I will sell. Probably includes the valve but I'll have to check.
