G30 (2017 - Current)
The next generation 5 Series, chassis code G30, arrives at dealers in February 2017. Looking like a scaled down 7 Series and riding on the CLAR platform, the new 5 Series will have a focus on lightweight and sporty performance. Engines options will come from BMW's new B family for the 530 and 540 and a turbocharged V8 for the M550i. Read more about the 2017 5 Series

Make your M550i sound like the M850i...

So the M550i has 4 total resonators, right in the middle of the exhaust. Also would like to note the entire exhaust system is 1 piece only, from the turbo-back all the way to the exhaust tips, I was pretty shocked to see this when my car was under the lift. As I wanted something louder without changing the entire exhaust, I had a local shop remove all 4 of the resonators by replacing it with a straight pipe. A simple $160 job.

The car sounds much better, much much better. In sport plus it crackles and pops and backfires and is really addicting, it's really how the car should have sounded and is pretty loud and deep, I love it. Videos don't do it any justice; the exhaust tone is very deep.

So after looking at M850i videos for the heck of it, I realized that the M850i sounds similar to my car now and wondered if BMW just omitted the resonators for the M850i. When I went to the dealer today to pick up my car, I saw an M850i and looked under it, and only saw 2 resonators...

Definitely a "mod" I suggest for anybody with an M550i that wants the car to sound significantly better.

Iím gonna check it out. I mean for that money itís a lot more cost effective than the Dinan exhaust at 2600

So that sounds awesome for a loud-exhaust, hard-chargin' car, but how does it sound with regular driving, regular mode? One of the reasons the m550 appealed to me over, say, an AMG or the S6 is that it was/could be quiet, understated, kinda stealthy for a high-performance car. I love how that sounds, but I wouldn't want a car that sounds like that all the time.

in comfort mode its a little louder, but definitely still falls under the "quiet" category though.
It really only sounds like this in sport +.

yea - once the car is on the lift it's pretty self explanatory. they chop off the center with the resonators and replace with straight pipes.

How would one go about selecting a reputable shop to do this work?

And, would it have any effect on the warranty?

Just go to any muffler shop. They should all be able to do this.
It is post cat so it shouldn't have any bearing on warranty, no different than doing a cat back exhaust

Great! Let me know what you think. Seriously considering this, provided it remains relatively subdued in Comfort/Adaptive mode.

it's a bit louder in comfort mode when cruising and under acceleration, but the trade-off is definitely worth it.

I am so happy I did this the car Sounds great. Under regular driving in comfort mode there is not much difference in sound itís a little bit more bass like. But when you put that car in sports plus and get on that engine it sounds amazing. Once again not loud enough to be obnoxious but it sounds like it was meant to be.

glad you like it.

the car from outside sounds very deep, and the overrun and burbles sound really good on the upshift/downshift especially if the sound echos between buildings.

It'll only look obvious if you're laying underneath the car looking up...
