Alarm question

The previous owner's wife lost all the keys to her 1999 Z3 except for one. That includes the keyless entry key fob. I'm thinking that locking the driver's door with the key should set the alarm system. Is that correct or incorrect?? The alarm set red light has not come on since I bought the car 2 weeks ago. But the radio alarm red light does when I lock the door. The seller had told me that the red light on the radio was the car alarm. I have since found out that is not correct when I made a post here asking if anyone knew what the little red light on the dash next to the steering wheel was for. Every car that I've had in the past would turn on the alarm light when I locked the car with a key.

Using the key on my car does not set the alarm. I can only set it using the fob.

Thanks for the response. It seems odd to me that you can't set the alarm when you lock the driver's door with a key but maybe that's the way BMW thinks it ought to work.
