I had been thinking about a Miata for years. I had a Triump TR6 for about 20 years and wanted to get back into a sports car. The Z4's kept popping up in the used car searches and I kept reading more about them and then a 2006 Z4 3.0si popped up at a dealership where I knew the owners real well. Went and drove it and bought it on the spot for a deal and haven't looked back.

I would say that the post-facelift years (2006 and later) would be the safer choice. The N52 engine has proven to be a good one and a lot of other bugs were worked out.

I had 2 Miatas (a '92 and '04 Mazdaspeed) and if "fun" is what you want, the Miata wins hands down. I have had my '07 3.0si for almost 11 years now and while it is a much better overall vehicle (e.g. long trips in the MIatas were excruciating) and certainly more powerful and comfortable, it's just not as tossable as the Miatas were.

And yes, '06-'08 3.0si, but must be 6 speed manual

I am quite enjoying my 07 3.0i with 6 speed manual. You lose a few horses but still a great roadster.

ROFL when I was searching for mine the first thing I did was check in the search filters for "manual transmission".

I can drive my 3.0si within that power curve and have a blast. In fact since I am without any mufflers I have to around town

Here in the UK the road tax is £250 for the 2.0l size, £500 thereafter, Swmbo has one and it doesn't matter much, she's not heavy on the loud pedal!

I bought my wife a 1997 Miata and we both loved it. Some fool turned in to her and it was totaled. It trashed my lovelys foot as well. She wanted another convertible with stick but I wanted something heavier (substaintial). With limited options on what would fill the desires I researched and purchased a 2006 Z4Si black exterior / tan interior with the M seats and wheels. It was a year ago and we feel great about the choice. Miata was fun for sure but this is much more of a car. Good luck.

If you get the Z4, make sure to remove the drain plugs. I have a third time hydrolift failure and it costs too much to fix it, so my top is just a "decoration" at this point.

You can't go bad with either a Z4 or a Miata. I had a 2007 3.01 Z4 and loved it... pretty good mileage, fairly reliable, and tons of torque with the 6, plus it's comfortable on long trips.
Have had 3 Miatas.. a 2001 SE BRG 6 speed B series, a 2005 LS auto B series and a 2009 sport auto C series. All were great cars and a lot of fun to drive, especially on winding back roads and you really don't miss the HP in those situations. Also the Miata is much cheaper to maintain and repair and more reliable. On trips, the B series is horrible and the C series, although a bit quieter is also not a long distance trip car. In the Miata you feel like you really are in an old time roadster, in the Z4 you feel much more comfortable and "refined"
If you want a cheap roadster for the track, the Miata is the logical choice... there are a ton of aftermarket support items at dirt cheap prices. It is the most raced sports car in the world. Even if you blow the engine, you're looking at a few thousand, instead of more than the car costs like a Z.
Just depends on what you want, either way, you will have lots of fun, especially with the top down (true roadster)

If you decide to fix it again, move the lift motor to the trunk and your'e done.

Z3 roadster, or 06-07 z4 coupe. I still get thumbs up on the coupe, rarely seen even in Houston. The z4 roadsters are everywhere. The z3 roadsters are also real nice lookin.
