2006 BMW DSC Module

Hi everyone,

Looking for some help/insight here. I recently purchased a used 2006 bmw 325Ci and a month or so later while I was driving, the check control light came on as well as the yellow brake light. I took it in and the service center is telling me that I need a DSC module replacement.

I'm wondering if I'm being taken for a ride here- everything I've found says that a DSC module problem is usually accompanied by the DSC light, or even ABS or DTC lights. I'm thinking that it's a little fishy that this is the recommendation but i only have the BRAKE light on.

Any thoughts? I don't want to take the whole DSC module out and send it for repair if I actually just need my brake fluid topped off or brake pads replaced.

You will need to get a diagnostic tool that will scan the ABS/DSC - something like INPA, ISTA or BMW scanner 1.4 - the latter you can find on eBay or amazon for under $20 and should be in every e46/e39 owners tool kit.

There are specific codes that indicate the exact fault.Fault could be anything from a wheel speed sensor, steering angle sensor, pressure sensor or even low brake fluid. There are a few of the codes that indicate a complete failed module - which is when the module board is kaput (typically a broken solder joint.)

Repair of your current module is feasible and common - typical cost runs about $150. There are a few companies that offer this service - it's a good option for those that don't want to code a donor module to their car. Seeing your old board is repaired no coding required.

I cut the following from a post I had in another forum a few years back:

Without the code you can be chasing shadows for weeks. Here's just two of the ABS unit's error code list. First thing is find out what unit you have (Possibly #3 or Teves) then get the code and refer to the exact problem. The one that I hinted to my my prior post is 5DF2 Internal Error, Valve/ECU Hardware Error, ROM/RAM Check. If it's this then you need to remove and send the ABS unit for repair else swap it with a donor. If your swapping it (if that's what the error is) then read my thread here on doing it:

Swapping, Coding ABS Donor Module & Steering Angle Calibration

BMW ABS fault codes.

Edit: If you are going to try to fix this yourself a BMW specific scanner would be useful (necessary) PA Soft or INPA can read the exact errors. INPA can actually assist with replacement (both are under £15 )
