stealer voodoo - i can't believe it

so, i've been enjoying my new (to me) 03 540i sport for the last 10 days. today, during a spirited and sharp turn, i heard a little power steering noise and felt that "wizzy" feeling in the steering wheel for a bit.

no worries i thought, prob just a little low on the fluid (i've come to realize the previous owner was a little lax on the maintenance even though she's only got 37K on the clock). so i break out my trusty owners manual to look for the fluid type and check and fill procedure only to find there's no mention of it. no biggie, i'll just ask my boys on bimmerfest.

on my way home to the computer, i pass a dealer. i figure, i need to pop in to get the CPO waranty transferred over and whatnot, so i'll ask them about the PS while I'm there. I pull in and park. I go into service ask my questions, service guy tries to sell me a $900 30K service...yada yada. i tell him i'll think about it. he tells me to bring the car around and he'll show me the PS reservoir. I start the car "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" WTF???? Car was fine a second ago. do they have some kind of remote thingy that does that to generate business lol. i tell the service writer what happened, he just grins and asks me when i would like to make an appointment.

i am sooo pissed right now. can't even think straight. fellas, help me out to figure what this might be before i have to bring her back. maybe its something simple and i'm just not seeing it bc i am annoyed. if not, is there any other way i can get the code pulled before going to the dealer so i know what i'm up against and the dealer can't bs me?

the cheapest (well, actually free) solution to this is a visit to AUTO ZONE. They do the diagnostics (read codes) free of charge. THEN, take it to the stealer.
In any case should you not have CPO???

Had you just stopped to get gas? Check your fuel cap. If you didn't tighten it, it will throw a CEL.

I second the recommendation to either go to autozone for a diagnostic, or preferably get your own Peake reader so that you can diagnose and fix problems yourself; best tool for the BMW that you'll ever own, especially if you plan on keeping it for a long time.

That's almost as good as the time I stopped at the dealer to get parts and when I turn the car on to leave the "oil Service" light came on, for the first time since I owned the car.

well, i went to autozone and they let me borrow their OBD-II scanner and I pulled the codes. There was only one in the system - P0442 "Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)" One cause could be the infamous gas cap. I actually had just filled up and made sure she was tight. Cleared the code and the light went out (so happy lol) I put about 50 miles on her and nothing so far. hopefully stays that way. thanks for the advice and autozone rocks!

Mein Auto:
Anyone wondering how to get OBD /OBDII codes checked in Canada, PartSource will check the OBD codes for free, like Autozone in US.

Not that it matters to me anymore. I found out about it AFTER I bought the ELM327 USB ODBII reader ($50ish.. ebay). In hindsight I should've gone for the BMW Carsoft based interface instead of ELM327 interface. Uninformed decisions ..heh.

Here's a comparison:

Comparison index : Peake OBD ------ Peake SRS ------- ELM 327-------- Carsoft.
OBD Codes ----------------Y-------------------N-------------------Y------------------Y
SRS Codes +reset---------N------------------Y--------------------N-----------------Y
ABS Codes -----------------N------------------N--------------------N-----------------Y
ASC Codes------------------N------------------N--------------------N-----------------Y
LCM codes+prog------------N-----------------N---------------------N-----------------Y
Service lights reset---------Y------------------N--------------------N-----------------Y
Cost -------------------------$120-------------$120----------------$50--------------$120

Take your pick. You do need a laptop (or a desktop near the car) for ELM327 Or Carsoft.

Hey Bada, did Autozone clear the code for you, or did you clear it yourself with your reader?

Chris

Oh okay, when I went there the guy stood there next to me, but I had to plug it in to my OBD reader and take all the readings out. I was just curious cause I got the same readings to replace my gas cap, which I did, I never did reset it though, but it went away for a bit, then came back on. Well the readings from there are the same codes, so I took it to my mechanic today and he told me I need to replace the Air Mass Meter, which I don't mind doing, but I really don't want to replace something that doesn't need to be.

Codes
This list contains standard diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's) that are used by some
manufacturers to identify vehicle problems. The codes provide below are generic codes
that may not apply to all vehicles. Vehicle manufacturers may use manufacturer specific
DTC codes that are different from the codes shown below. Foreign vehicles may also
use DTC codes different from the generic DTC codes. We recommend that you not
depend on the DTC codes in this list for vehicle repairs until you confirm the generic
DTC codes apply to your vehicle(s). The list below is for information purposes only and
is not intended for use in vehicle repairs.

Very nice, those are helpful.......The weirdest thing happen this morning, I had to re-fill up on some gas, when I put the gas cap back on and drove away the CEL went away. I did earlier in the week put and extra gasket behind the rubber O-Ring on the cap itself, since I didn't reset it at the time I didn't think it worked, but I forgot it takes 30 to 40 miles for the system to reset, so maybe that was it and I'll just hold onto my Air Mass Meter to see if the CEL comes back on.

Partsource in Ontario must be more obliging, I just called one in Edmonton and they would sell me the reader for $250 but do not offer free readings! Guess I'll go to my friendly neighborhood mechanic.

It's not a refrigerator so setting out with an unknown vehicle without doing any preventive maintenance isn't a good idea
You admit to having a car that's "a liittle lax on maintenance". It's time to get it caught up.
If you are not a do it yourself type then find an independant(check with the local BMWclub) who will cost less. I'm not familiar with what is on the inspections for your car but know that $900 isn't atypical on others at the dealer.
The light could be something as simple as a loose gas cap.
Someone here can probably provide you the maintenance schedule for your car.

I agree Ross, to be honest outside of this pesky CEL, I really haven't had any major problems with my car, because I do the scheduled maintenance on it.

Fault Codes P1343 P1350 P0300

P1343 Misfire Cylinder 1 With Fuel Cut-off
P1350 Misfire During Start Cylinder 5

My car got the voodoo treatment too this a.m. Well, last weekend, I needed more room to work by my garage worktable so I backed up my 530. Started it, and turned off engine after just a few seconds. Didn't use the car on Sunday. Today, wife calls to say the car was shaking and SES light's on! I think I made the mistake of turning off engine so soon when fuel was just getting ready for distribution through the pipes. Car ran smooth after a while and I cleared the error codes tonight. Hope it stays that way.

If that was the problem, then merely reset the fault code. Or if you don't, then it will go away after a couple cycles and reset itself. This is also the e39 forum, but I understand some issues transcend models....

I remember reading that the gas cap error is also easily set if you "top off" your gas tank too much. There must be a vent just below the filler head that if gas gets into it will set a CEL until the gas physically dries up. Ever since reading, when the gas pump shuts off, I give it one more squeeze and the next time it stops-quit. Have not seen that error since and we are talking over 2 years.
