Warped Rotors

Just an FYI in case you find yourself in a similar situation.

Bought a 2007 CPO X3 last year with 36K on it. The rap sheet up to that point in time showed no work ever on the brakes. After 1K more miles I manage to warp the front rotors. No worry, BMW replaces. After another 5K miles I manage to warp the rotors again and BMW is good enough to replace the pads and rotors a 2nd time. Now I'm another 5K miles down the road and have warped the rotors a 3rd time. The only common contributing factors are me (the driver) and interstate roads (higher speeds on dry roads). This time the dealership involves Munich and the word is that on occasion the pads don't bed in properly. The "solution" is to machine the stock rotors with a different pattern that facilitates the bedding process. I'm just getting the vehicle back now so no comment yet on whether the rotors look markedly different. Sounds a little like a hail Mary pass to me - but BMW says this has worked in other cases like mine. I'll refresh this again when I'm 5K more down the road or the problem redevelops - whichever comes first.

Here's an update. The "machining" that was done to the rotors seems to be no more than a little emery cloth swirling on the face of each rotor. Perhaps BMW did a ltitle more on the inside face of the rotor but I didn't bother to look since what I could see on he outside seemed trivial. Oh well, we'll just have wait about 5K miles. I will however take it really easy for the first tank full of gas to see if this will help seat the pads well.

Make sure the lug studs are correctly torqued. If they are over torqued, they could contribute to rotor warping. This is how I bed in new rotors and pads and I've never had an issue:

Thanks just had my brakes done. BMWNA would not do the rotors as they had 6/100'ths of an inch passable. It has now been about 45 days and they are going to do them (yeah talk about idiot policies- anything to weasel out of all inclusive warranty). I will make sure to try this if possible on the way home when they are complete.

Here's an update. Noticed that this 4th set of rotors is beginning to warp again. Noticable only at highway speeds. The 1st set went in 2K, the 2nd and 3rd took 5K, and 4th took 3K. Dealer agrees and opens a PuMA case. By the end of the day they informed me that BMW was going to ship a new set of calipers. Great to see that some dealers (Wagner BMW Shrewsbury) are willing to see these problems through while footing the entire bill.

Hey, is that a roundabout way of telling us you won your battle?

Congrats!

I assume you'll be having the rotors done at the new dealer.

Hey, I caught that too. Got the problem resolved -- but was it at another dealer or did you keep Passport's feet to the fire?

Sorry that is an older post. Still yet to resolve this as the BMWNA rep assigned to this is on vacation. Another stall tactic if you ask me.

I have 1,200 to go (on warranty) so going to go to Russel and see what they say in the meantime.

Whoops, I viewed the thread on my phone and missed the post was stale.

Good luck with the ongoing battle!
