If I can stay off my bike long enough I'll reach 21 at the end of this year...

I'd prefer to be 28 as it says next to my name on page 1 but I'll actually be 31 in November.

Are we adding newer arrivals? Officially I'll be 64 this year. Unofficially I'm 2 as I should have died (according to my cardiologist) 3/25/18 due to 100% blockage in my left main artery.

I do love the Buick Regal TourX, but new cars are not in my budget. I will just have to settle with driving used bimmers for the foreseeable future.

So once again I am stuck with being average...I turn 50 in 2020.

I am 71 years old, and loving my first BMW. I have never driven a Buick that I recall, nor do I expect to. I pray my BMW X5 is my last automobile, that my daughter takes my key away in good time. I am and always have been exceptional, in one case by +4 standard deviations.

I get a $4k rebate on any new GM car. Frau Putzer was demanding an SUV to replace her twelve year old Honda Accord. She hated the previous generation Chevy Equinox, even though it was the right size.

We were driving along one day and she saw an SUV in traffic that she really liked. I couldn't figure out what make it was at first. It turned out to be a Buick Envision, which is almost exactly the same size as a BMW X3. Looking in the Buick website, the interior was... BMW-esque. So far, so good. But, it all went south when I found out the Envision is made in China.

The sales managers at the local Honda and Hyundai dealerships ended up being ****heads. So, Frau Putzer got an X3.

In China, Buick has the same status as BMW. GM actually makes better Buicks in China than they do here.

The year we turn 50 is the FIRST year to add that 'catch up' contribution into our 401k.

I decided in December to contribute big and finish early in the year. Now, especially as we can expect 401k matching as the 1st benefit taken away by employers in a downturn, the key is contributing as much match as possible while we still have the company match benefit. If still employed, I should reach the max company match by the end of June. It's a painful 6 months, but that's the name of the retirement game, isn't it? Happy 50th!

What's a 401k? I've got 6 kids! Luckily 2 have aged out but this fall one starts college and another gets a license. Here in Michigan nothing coverage on a beater for a teenage girl is $250/month!
My company dropped the 401k match long ago, although they did eventually bring it back to a couple hundred dollars. That last few years I've been maxing out my HSA but with such a high deductible most of it gets used. I was planning on shifting some of my contributions to our 401k this summer but this CoViD-19 thing...I may just need the cash.

baby boomers are the richest because of catch up 401K. It's unfair to those who live by paycheck to paycheck.

Damn. 6 kids. You're lucky. Hopefully, at least ONE of them will take some pity on you when you'll need it. I just have the one shot. If we p!ss her off too bad, we're on our own!

Damn Boomers. Just ask anyone. They're the scourge of the earth, the reason for all of our troubles, the nemesis for those poor, emotion-addled adults who are progeny of the very boomers we despise.

It was these very same boomers who rebelled against their own parents from "The Greatest Generation." And they, the generation before who lit into the new century with a lion's roar muted only by disease, economic turmoil, record unemployment, and the need for jobs offset only by the sudden need for paid soldier-citizens at global war.

And so it is: The circle of life.

Not all Boomers are the same. At least some of we "late" Boomers weren't part of the draft card burning, drugged-out, 'hate-the-man' as the earlier Boomers. I always thought those guys were pretty dumb. Never took any illegal (or now legal) substance and made a pretty good life for my family, even as a lowly federal employee (granted, it was a white-collar, low-employee number occupation).

A lot of us Boomers see these latest generations as lazy and entitled. I trained more than a few of them at work.

If still employed, I should reach the max company match by the end of June. It's a painful 6 months, but that's the name of the retirement game, isn't it? Happy 50th!
Some companies allow true-up at end of year, ours does not, so contributing to max early will not help.

Yes, yes, of course. My point was made with my tongue planted firmly within its cheek. You weren't the only one I failed.

To be clear, my point is...

That even as we humans like to dispel our responsibility to history by calling things 'unprecedented,' we've simply been around too long not to have been through the same cycle time and time again. And yet, because we approach every new problem- and generational divide- as one that has to be solved again, and again, we end up fighting the same ones, losing, and being happy we escaped with our teeth still skinned.

It's silly to have to defend each generation. Obviously, there are biases. Regardless, the baby boomers have so much money they don't know what to do with it. Thanks to catch up 401K.

K, Boomer" is what younger people say when they want to dismiss boomers as being out of touch or stuck in our boomer ways, sort of this generation's version of "If you say so, old-timer." It's not exactly an ageist insult, but it sure ain't a compliment.

Fine. OK. We get it. Have fun. But remember one thing before slinging insults: The world, according to Harvard psychology professor Steven Pinker (and many others), is better off now than it's been at any time in history. That's right. Ever. And I contend it's because of boomers. Boomers are the greatest generation the world has ever known. The most innovative. The most caring. The hardest-working. That may seem a bit much, but to quote the pitcher Dizzy Dean, "It ain't bragging if you can back it up."

It depends if lessons are learnt from history and people are self-motivated without anyone tells them what to do. A blatant example is how people in countries burnt by SARS/MERS universally respond(mask on!), while people in US/EU(boomers and millennials alike) pay little attention.

Indeed. The king of change dependencies is the one that hinges a different outcome. Even as I make light of it here, I have seen little or no meaningful evidence that mankind can escape our nature by allowing nurture to drive better decisions.

We respond only to pain and pleasure for our own generation, forgetting one and leaving the next to fight our battles again. With history as our guide, we know it's not generational, it's systemic. This isn't to suggest it's unavoidable. But it is to observe that we've yet to avoid it.

Well the head-on experience is not that great, although it does appear some start to adapt/adopt slowly.
