What does your owner's manual recommend? There are tons of oil threads on this forum and over here - https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/fo...play.php?f=437

I just went to Walmart today to buy some Castrol, and apparently it is no longer LL-01 certified. Still said European Formula, but no mention of BMW on the front, and no LL-01 rating on the back. So what oil can we easily buy now?

If you are not under warranty, use that Castrol 0W40. BMW is not certifying LL01 anymore and Castrol slightly changed formula in that oil so it has to be approved again. But, BMW is not doing it anymore. Castrol 0W40 is approved for MB 229.5 which is far more stringent specification than LL01. Now, if you are still under warranty, get Castrol 5W40. But, it is mediocre oil in every aspect.

229.5 is better than LL01 except in oxidative thickening, while 229.51 is better than LL01 in all aspects, but 229.51 is low-SAP and for diesel only.

Difference on oxidative thickening is absolutely minimal between MB229.5 and LL01. MB229.51 is NOT only for diesels. It is ACEA C3 oil and has lower SAPS. BMW and MB still donít recommend using oils like that (which would be LL04 on BMW side) in gas engines although the US moved to ULSG on 01/01/2017. VW thinks it is OK.
Either way, using MB229.5 (Castrol 0W40) in 320i is perfectly fine.

The US gasoline sulfur content is still pretty high even with latest regulation, e.g. US mandates 10ppm average but still allows 80ppm max at gate, and 95ppm max downstream. Euro gasoline standard is 10ppm max.

MB also disagrees with using 229.51 for non-diesel by stating this on their USA approved engine oil lists:

"Starting with MY2007 diesel engines must use only 229.51 approved engine oil. 229.51 is only approved for diesel engines."
