2013 F30 CIC failure

I've had an issue come up with my iDrive in my F30. The iDrive interface does not complete the boot-up process; it just stays frozen on the BMW splash screen. This lasts for about 2 minutes, then it tries to reboot itself - goes blank until the splash screen reappears. While this is happening, the radio continues to play on the last station I'd had on.

Do all F30s have a combox and could this be the problem? HU?

This looks like a head unit issue, does your car have Nav/tech package? There was a SIB on CIC/head unit for early F30s(fault code B7F8C3), software was updated per B65 10 12 and there has been no issue since.

F30 CIC Issue

Thanks for your response; This F30 has no navigation package and was manufactured in 01/13. Will a obd2 scanner detect if head unit is dead? Will an inexpensive scanner reveal anything about 'infotainment' system or media in general?

Thanks again

OBD2 scanner should work, other posters use Carly and/or other tools too.

Another option is to go to service and ask for a key data printout, which does contain active and inactive fault codes(though it is unclear to me if the list is complete or not).

Thanks

Key data printout; that's interesting information. Thank you, I'll check it out. Are you a technician by any chance?

If I replace the head unit myself will I also be able to code it or program it to the car?

Not a tech, just an enthusiastic F30 owner.

There is a website named bmwtechnician.com and is ran by a real BMW tech.

There is also a coding sub-forum that should have posts about tools/steps needed to program new head unit.
