Pls advise on ED price negotiation

I'm looking to get this car (550):

https://www.bmwusa.com/byo.html#!/build/color/dcirbmml

Could someone please advise me as to what a reasonable ED price would be? This will be my third ED car. With my last two cars, the dealer was adamant that they couldn't negotiate below the ED retail price, and the sales guy I'm dealing with no is no different in that regard. But in the end, they ended up giving me a significant discount below the ED retail, and I'm not sure if it's reasonable for me to push for that again.

Thanks!

- Dave

What dealership?

With ED you can order from any dealer, anywhere in the country. It's worth reaching out to Adrian, Greg Poland, Ty Vil and Michael Brown if you're not comfortable with the deal you are being offered.

Sadly, the ED program no longer produces the same dramatic savings as it did when you got your F10.

I'm not in complete agreement with this. When the "rack rate" discount was 7% off US MSRP I **always** was able to negotiate a discount of 11+% from US MSRP. Now the rack rate's been reduced to 5% discount, only a 200 basis point delta. 2% on a 60K purchase (more so on a lease) is $1,200 - not a deal breaker in my mind. What hasn't been discovered yet is if there's some hidden funds on ED deals that gives the dealer more discretionary wiggle room

All I can say is I got ED invoice + $1200 including doc fees with two emails. My total ED retail MSRP was $68,300 and change and my final total sale price including everything but tax was $65,300 or about $3000 under ED retail and almost $8,000 under US MSRP. That was an end of 2017 model year car and I was told it was $1300 or so better than the typical ED deal they write but even that would have been $1700 under ED retail.

I shopped around a little. one SA used by a lot of folks on this forum said 1k over ed invoice. I took that number to another dealer...two actually and they both said $500 over ED invoice..one local and one out of state. out of state was $500 plus shipping...I went to yet a 4th dealer who is also out of state, ED invoice flat. no shipping...DONE!! as soon as I can order a 2018 340 I will deal with them. so shop around, dont be afraid to have it shipped.

I guess I should have been a little clearer. Not only has BMW reduced the ED discount, but many of the incentives we've become used to (UDE, Loyalty, etc.) are no longer available for ED. In the case of my soon-to-arrive 540, ED (including the rate adder because I lease) was actually MORE expensive than domestic delivery.

I don't doubt that a bit. I only did ED because I was not in a hurry, I don't lease so waiting for shipment wasn't a big deal, I was already going to be in Europe on my employer's dime and I had never done an ED.

If you don't value the ED experience and can't justify the travel cost separately it really doesn't make sense. For my circumstances, with only a few hundred dollars in extra travel costs it was a definite clear and significant cost save. I doubt that is the case very often.

Thanks for the replies - just seeing them now. For some reason I didn't get the usual notification email.

I'm looking at a loaded 2017 550, which apparently are pretty much in demand. But that's also what I got for my last two cars, and was able to negotiate significant savings from ED retail from my dealer (BMW of Peabody). Sadly, my sales guy isn't there any more. I don't know if it's that the new guy won't deal, or it's the dealer, but he will only give me ED retail. So I would like to talk to other dealers. I wouldn't mind buying from out of state. In the past, my dealer told me that they would only offer free loaners during service if I bought the car from them. I haven't heard that lately, hopefully they don't have that policy any more.

So how do I find some of these dealers mentioned above? Is there a list somewhere?

There is a list in the ED wiki but I think it's a bit dated. I'd recommend Adrian Avila in Atlanta, not exactly near you, but an ED specialist and board sponsor.

Mike Wendroff at Morristown would be much closer. From Boston, you can even get there pretty easily by train for the redelivery.

There's no hidden funds on ED deals. Worse, G30's have to originate from dealer allocation like all M's. So if a dealer donates an allocation, they're losing the hold back on that car from the manufacturer. So the dealer is seriously doing a client a favor by even discounting from ED MSRP on an ED allocated model. The funny thing is that some dealers and their GM's aren't even aware that they lose the hold back and do these very modest deals over invoice which basially translate to negative deals since they would've been better off keeping the car either in stock or for a domestic sold order.

If there are no hidden funds on ED deals how does someone get below ED invoice (before incentives)? Quota-based bonuses?

You should ask that dealer? In my career, I've worked for four BMW centers- none of them went below ED invoice. I don't even think they count towards quota-based bonuses since they're not domestic retail delivery reported sales.

My best answer is because they simply don't know any better. Perhaps that dealer thinks that they're getting hold back and never audit themselves to verify that they didn't.

l've done 3 EDs and enjoyed each one. However, you can often do as well, if not better on price, with a domestic delivery. That said, IF you want to go to Europe on vacation, combining it with a BMW ED is a very good option.

Dick, you're right as usual. The 2% drop in the base ED discount is not a huge difference. While it's still possible to negotiate a $xxx over ED invoice deal, often a US deal comes out cheaper due to the various incentives offered that don't apply to ED cars.

It used to be a pretty straightforward proposition to calculate the savings on ED deals. Now, with the ever changing and dizzying array of incentives it's much more challenging to figure out the best deal. (BMWCCA, corporate fleet, USAA, AARP, teamUSA, UDE, option credits, BMWFS...)
