Trunk opens on its own

The trunk of my car randomly opens on its own when I am far out of range of the key remote. So far this has only been happening at home. I live in an apartment building and park my car in the underground parking garage with 20 or so other cars every night. I have tested opening it from my apartment just to see if I'm accidentally pressing it while I'm home, and it does not open it.

My car is a 2017 330i Gran Turismo.

I believe that a security / personal safety issue should be brought to the dealership's attention.

It sounds like this ONLY happens in your garage at home, not at work, at the mall, the supermarket, etc. Possibilities, however remote:

1. You are accidentally hitting / brushing the trunk release button on the inside of the door as you exit.
2. You have a BMW-driving neighbor with the exact same coding on his remote. I would imagine the odds are 1 in several million, but unless there are an infinite number of codes, it's a possibility.
3. There is RF interference inside your garage that triggers the release: a gate, a garage door, etc.
4. The world's neatest homeless people sleep in your car every night, then tidy up and leave every morning.
5. Demonic possession and/or your car is a portal to another dimension.

That has happened to me a few times. The first time I think I hit the button on the remote that was in my pocket as I bent over. The second time it happened to me was when a guy with a Nissan, parked next to me, locked his car with his remote.

A work around would be to set the valet switch inside the glove box. Once set, your remote (or the switch by the driver's door) should not open your trunk.

It has happened to me too. One thing I notice - if my keys are anywhere near me, and I'm anywhere near the car, almost anything makes the trunk pop due to the sensor under the bumper. Seriously - if its sunny and a cloud quickly blocks the sun, the shadow makes the car think someone is passing their foot under the bumper. And the car wash hose ALWAYS opens the trunk when it accidentally slides behind the rear wheels. I have to lock the car and leave the keys far away inside the house so the trunk doesn't pop open.

If your car is locked, and the keys are not in range at all, and it opens anyway, well then you've got a cloned key out there somewhere. Or the car is broken.

Worst case, disable the trunk function? Good luck!

How do you know it opened when you were out of range?

Check your battery age and charge. Bmw cars are known to do weird things when battery is low

Since your car is newer, possibly have the dealer perform the following TSB.

TAILGATE.pdf

Keep in mind that it may take some time for the Mechanic to code it in. At least that is what my dealer told me. It might help with your unintentional trunk opening.

I have a 2017 340i. Mine did same thing. I got a key fob cover. I was activating fob in my pocket.
