328i or 328d?

hi Guys,

I am in market for either a new or CPO 328i or 328d. The reason I am even considering diesel is because of my commute. I am going to be driving 90Miles a day (45mi one way) in California to my work.

I test drove both last weekend and honestly couldn't tell the difference between them. This is the first BMW I will own. The 50MPG of 328d is tempting but here in US, the diesels are not that popular. So I am a bit hesitant.


If I bought a 328d, looks like I will have to refill after 1.5 weeks whereas if I got a 328i, I will have to refill every week. Cost of gas is not that big of a concern but I'd like to not fill gas more than once a week.

So...here're my questions :

1. Other 328i and 328d owners, what kind of mileage do you get on highway? (newer model)
2. What do you guys think of the analysis of diesel vs gasoline above? Any recommendations?

I get excellent highway mileage, actually topping out one 6 hour trip at the speed limit at 54.1 mpg. 50 in the sedan is not hard to obtain. For that long a commute the d would seem a no brainer.

Over the long haul the bmw 328i will be more reliable and have less repairs. If your planning on driving the car into the ground... I would definitely buy the 328i. With emission regulations, diesels are not made like they use to be. Plus the 328i will get 32-34 mpg on the highway depending if your using your cruise control or not.

If you are planning on only driving the car for a few years, then I would get the extra maintenance package (100k/6 years) + the extended warranty till (7 years/100k) and get the diesel! Sell the car shortly after 100k or right before it hits.

Also leasing and paying the extra miles isn't as ridiculous as it sounds if you purchase the miles ahead of the time. Only look into that if you are planning on selling the car in 4 years anyways. Remember all cars are bad investments but if your going to get one at least drive a bmw!

I have the 328xd and very happy. The dealer was pushing the diesel last summer and the 328xd price was competitive with 320i
I have not found diesel station availability to be an issue
The gasoline 328 is faster so if economy/range is important you will be happy with diesel.
In summer with a 60/40 highway /city split i get low 40 mpg and about 600 mile range
On a highway trip could get close to 50 mpg if you try
Off the line the diesel torque is very strong.

Is there any real data that suggests the diesel is less reliable?

In full disclosure I leased my 328xd.
There is uncertainty about long term reliability of di diesel. The 335d has a well documented carbon buildup issue history which may or may not have been addressed in this gen diesel. I don't know if this is fuel quality, direct injection or urea. Or all 3.

Consumer Reports did a review a few months ago. I don't have an on line subscription, so I can't check what their reliability rating was now. But I think that the "d" was at least average.

Also, with the number of miles I will put into the car(~22k/year), it will likely depreciate a lot pretty quickly and may not be worth selling. I have heard that BMWs can last long if you maintain them well.

Based on my research and your answer above, here's what I am thinking. I will probably get the 328i CPO, so I don't have to pay premium for the new car. Get the 100k/6yrs maintenance package(Not sure if this will be available on a CPO?). Will *not* get the 7 year/100k extended warranty since I will likely hit the 100k limit way before that.

Any concerns with this approach? Thanks in advance again, this is super useful for a noob like me!

The certified pre owned cars come with a 6 year/100k warranty. So for example: if you bought a used 2012 328i (purchased in december 2012) with 50k on it... you would have till december 2018 or until you hit 100k.

I think that is a good idea. Anyone buying a newer bmw should buy the maintenance package (my opinion) if your going to keep your car properly maintained (Have to pay eventually anyway).

Only way I would buy brand new, is if your plan is to get a 2014/15 with 1,000-10,000. You actually can pay just as much because of the great warranty you get. I personally got a new bare bones bmw because I don't need all the special gadgets (phone does everything). Blue tooth hooks up your phone, so you don't even need to look at your screen when using navigation. Music + Navigation what else do you really need ( Again my opinion)? Brand new you will get the 4 year/50k maintenance free with the car (CPO too until it runs out), plus you can always upgrade to the 6 year/100k on both.

I just like knowing I broke in the car properly and got it serviced on time. These damn cars cost so much money and I want to make sure, I am doing my part. I had an 86 535i beamer and 03 325xi and most of my mechanical problems were from previous owners not maintaining the cars properly. CPO's are obviously a little different circumstances.

Every bmw has its own story and it is your decision, how you want to start the story of yours.

I'm also looking at the 328d and, like you, found the engine to be more than adequate if not as powerful as the gas version. Handling, of course, is the same in either car. If you drive 20,000 miles per year, you'll probably save ~~$800 per year on fuel, and it looks like you might put on even more miles than that. That's not insignificant - think of it as getting either a 328i or a 328d + M-Sport at the same cost.

Also, when you're getting 500-650+ miles/tank, you won't have any trouble finding stations selling diesel. In my urban area, I'd guesstimate that ~20% of the stations carry it.

1) My wife's 328xd sedan gets 45 or more on the highway. In her current 60% city/30% highway she's at 39.
2) Consider a 320i - it's essentially the same engine as the 328i, but tuned for less power and more mileage. Some people are getting pretty good (not diesel good) mileage in them.

You won't need the maintenance package; the main reason to get it is to pay for oil/air/a-c filter changes and brake changes. You probably won't need the brake stuff since it's mostly a highway car with low brake usage.

It's good that you're not going to buy the extended 7/100K warranty; you're in CA and the car will (almost certainly unless it's an out-of-state used car you end up with) covered by the 7/70K CA Emissions warranty. If the 335d and x5d experience is any indicator, it will be the emissions systems that are problematic on the 328d. Either car should easily go 200K miles (but perhaps not without problems at some point.)

Yup, I had thought of it that way too. Few questions :

1. How did you come up with $800 savings? I would love to know so I can do the same math when I weigh in my options

2. If diesel history is anything to go by, all the savings that you would get from the d engine would be put in to fixing it at some point in time, right?

I got my 328d XDrive last April. After 15 months and 19,000 miles I'm nothing but happy. 40mpg average for my weekly commute. 50+ on the freeway (and this car loves the freeway). Great in the snow. Never a lick of trouble. Taking a 3,000 mile road trip later this year and looking forward to the drive.

Now that I'm on my third diesel I just have this quick bit of advice...diesels are meant for the Interstate.They're not meant for errands,short trips to the office or stop-and-go driving.About 90% of my miles are at 70mph...and I love my "d".I don't like it on those rare occasions when I'm in heavy traffic.

I don't think they rated reliability.That's usually due to lack of data and/or because it's a new model.But they gave the car a very high score for all the other things they test.

There is no reason to go with the 180HP 328d when you can have the much cheaper 180HP 320i. If you ask, the 328d is no quicker at any speed.

7000$+tax+interests is hard to recoup with 650$ annual savings. Probably a bit less with same equipment but you get the idea.

Isn't 320i very basic? I am looking for something that has decent options as well since I will be driving it so much day in/day out.

The Feb '15 report, although a bit short, includes a chart of ratings of luxury compact sedans. 328d is rated top, with a score of 86, and predicted reliability of good. 328i is rated 3rd, with a score of 84, and a predicted reliability of fair.

You can get it basic, or you can get it optioned. You can't get it quite as optioned as a 328. Frankly, I don't think 1-2 mpg savings is a reason to get a 320.

I have a 2015 328d and absolutely love it! It's my first BMW but I have nothing to compare it with. Not sure if the original poster is from California but gas jumped almost fifty cents here while diesel stayed the same at $2.81 per gallon.

Actually, in Europe, it's called the 320d; here it is called the 328d, so BMW can make higher profits from those who think the 328d has the same hp as the 328i. I have the 320i which has the same hp as the 328d. I think the 328d is more expensive than my factory-order 320i, which has, as options, only sports package (with the staggered summer performance tires) and MT. Since mpg is much less important to me than smg (Smiles Per Gallon), I decided against diese, due to the higher price of the diesel model. And, despite all my efforts, my 320i gets really good mpg!

One interesting thing is that, if BMW does go with a I4 N/A instead of a detuned I4 turbo, the 320i can lose a few pounds(maybe another 60-80lb?), and can provide additional SMG(esp. since US-spec F30 won't see the new I3 turbo for a while).
