G30 (2017 - Current)
The next generation 5 Series, chassis code G30, arrives at dealers in February 2017. Looking like a scaled down 7 Series and riding on the CLAR platform, the new 5 Series will have a focus on lightweight and sporty performance. Engines options will come from BMW's new B family for the 530 and 540 and a turbocharged V8 for the M550i. Read more about the 2017 5 Series

Help with exhaust flap possible malfunction

I have a 2018 540i Msport, I was wanting to modify the exhaust flap to always stay open, partly for sound but mainly because I hate the look of exhaust only coming from one pipe at idle.

So I've gotten under the bumper to look at it, I am not able to move the flap when the car is shut off. I've even tried pushing a plastic trim tool in there to manually open it. It will not open with any reasonable amount of force.

Putting it in sport plus even warmed up doesn't open it. I took it on a quick spirited drive in sport plus and then got out to check in the driveway and it was still closed.

I also tried removing the fuse for the flap but it didn't work because the flap would never open in any test I did.

Has anyone done the mod on their G30 or know how to make the valve open manually so I can check to see if mine is malfunctining.

Any info would be appreciated

Thanks

If you want it to be open all the time, go to the driver's side in the trunk, remove the trim panel and look for the solenoid that controls the exhaust flap. It is probably mounted on rubber on the rear bulkhead, just below the tail lights. It will have one electrical connection and two vacuum hose connections. Disconnect both vacuum hoses and re-connect them, bypassing the solenoid altogether. Reconnection can be done with a sprinkler male-to-male fitting or buy a vacuum connector at your local parts store. When you now start the car, the vacuum will open the flap and it will stay open whenever you drive.

Keep in mind the above is for an F26 (X4), but it appears all late model BMW's have this setup.

Finally, it takes considerable force to open the flap mechanically under the car (it will hurt your finger to push the lever). You operate the flap from the outside of the exhaust pipe - nothing goes in the pipe...

I ended up removing the metal clip holding the valve shut and using metal wire from a large picture hanging kit to hold the valve open. Was hoping for a more reversible electrical fix with a fuse removal or the plug disconnect. But this should hold just fine. Slight improvement in sound, more importantly to me the exhaust will always come from both pipes

Why not pull one fuse in the trunk and skip all this hassle?

Pull fuse F203
1) Turn car on, put in sport. *Ensure the flaps are open
2) Go into trunk, pull fuse F203 (while car is still on)
3) Verify flaps are still open
4) Close trunk
5) Enjoy

Did you try this? The 540 seems to keep the flap closed when idling even in sport mode, it only opens under a certain amount of load so I think you will need to pull the fuse while someone else is driving under WOT in sport mode for it work.

That will be tricky as the fuse is located in the trunk.

If you remove that c-shaped spring clip, hang on to it. It's $10 to replace it if you want to go back to "stock" sometime in the future.

So which method?

I'd like to attempt this as well. Is there a consensus as to which method? Clip removal or fuse removal? Thanks!!!

How did you get the flap to be open on the 540 in order to remove the fuse?

I couldn't get it to work by removing the fuse. Went underneath, removed the clip and wired the valve in the open position. 3 minute job at the max.

Hello,
I must admit that this reassures me, I intended to take her back to BMW having noticed that the valves never open when stopped.

To read here it only opens when accelerating

I'm taking delivery of my 2017 540I MSport next week. I've got a couple of questions.

1. Will opening the flap be nearly as good as going with M Performance exhaust?
2. Does the M-Sport already have the M Performance exhaust
3. Does a CA car have CA specific smog crap on it?

Can't wait to get mine - mediterranean blue with mocha 11,000 miles

The flap does not seem to open when the car is idling. Seems like BMW changed it intentionally, as I think it used to open when put in sport at idle. I tried putting it in sport before starting the engine, tried with the engine running in Sport, Sport plus, etc. Always closed at idle, at least on my 2019 540xi. If any of you who have recommended the fuse pull have a way to get the flaps open while the car is parked, I would be glad to pull the fuse.--Bob

They haven't changed it on the 540 - I have a 2017 and the flap was never open at idle. The 540 is different to the M550i which does open at idle.
