Computer acting up on oil level??

Don't know what to make of this:
Changed the oil and filter on my wife's 2014 X1: 6 qts of 5W30 Castrol synthetic and BMW oil filter.
Started the car, checked for leaks, there were none. Drove around a few miles to reach operating temperature and then with the car in Park on level ground checked the level. It took a long time to get a result, over two minutes I thought, it showed the green bar roughly 2/3 up between min. and max. marks. Weird, before always showed up the max mark.
I changed the oil and filter on my 2015 328GT a couple weeks ago, same 6 qts, green bar went to max.
I am not going to add more oil, 6qts appears to be the qty I see just about everywhere for oil capacity.

Thoughts anyone?

Do you have the N20 or N55 engine?

FWIW, I have the N55 and it takes 6.5 Liters, (about 6.9 quarts)
For the first 2 engine oil changes that I did, I put in exactly 6.5 Liters.
The oil measurement on the iDrive screen showed max.
Then, on the 3rd change, again exactly 6.5 L went in and it showed slightly low.
But after a few weeks it showed full again up to the max bar.

So maybe give it a week or two.

Just to follow up...
Here are the specs for engine oil capacities on all E84 X1's.

So, if you have the N20, it should be 6.1 quarts.

wow! My 2014 s28i has always read full even just before 7 k mile oil change so sensor doesn't work. I changed oil myself at 5 K miles, and got 4.5 quarts out and put in 5 quart jug thinking capacity was that.

ok, What I really need to know is: HOW Much Oil Does Your X1 s28i or x28i use per miles, so I can add a little before 7 or 8k miles change.

We have the N20, 4 cylinder, Thank you for the chart, it confirms the 6 qts I put in.
I'll give it more time, the right amount of oil is in, no leaks. BMW and its sometime over-engineering: dipstick please!, no need to re-invent the wheel.
Cheers.

Then, there's this.
It appears the x28i takes 5.5 liters while the s28i takes 5.0 liters.

Interesting...

I don't think 200ml will make much of a difference.
But I find it strange that there is a different capacity in an engine oil depending on whether there is a transfer case or not.

Also, it seems the oil pans are alum on x and plastic on the s.

Differences of models takes time to figure out.

I agree with this. I put 5 quarts in my s28i (i.e. 2wd) when I recently changed the oil and filter. Onboard "guage" showed "full", but since the spec apparently shows 5 liters are required, I added an additional 1/4 quart. Still shows "full." I'm ok with the 5 liters spec.

Also, realoem look up with VIN showed I needed a plastic drain plug. Immediately previous oil service, by the service department at one of North American's largest dealerships, used a plastic plug. Mann oil filter HU 816 z KIT includes the plastic drain plug. BMW part number 11427953125, the latest part number specified, also includes the drain plug (as does the superceded "Genuine BMW" oil filter still being sold by some parts houses-- hey, it still works, why not?). Why this craziness, I cannot say, but I would guess BMW has to make money off their X1's somehow and keeping basic info like oil capacity mysterious might steer a few people otherwise inclined to DIY towards a $200+ dealership service dept oil change.

I change the oil today in my 2.8 X Drive. 5 quarts drained out…. I wanted to see how well the oil level indicator works and so I put four quarts in and ran the engine and then I got a message that said I am 1 quart low. I put a full quart in And checked it and it said full . I believe the last time I drained and filled it I used 6 quarts so I put a quarter of a quart in at a time and measured to make sure I did not get an overfill message and I ended up getting in 6 quarts

This indicator does not seem to be very accurate at all my guess is that it can only measure up to 1 quart at a time…. Where in my E 92 and three oil indicator could show 1/5 of a quart low

mine was acting up too, i used mobil1. i am going to try castrol oil and see if any better, it goes between full and half.

I think the new recommend oil is Penzoil, i will try that next.

dont forget that all these brand have Euro formula, the one i am using is not Euro formula. i wonder if it making a difference.

I don't think any different type of engine oil will make difference in e guage working.

I've used BMW 5w30 as factory and free maintenance, and Mobil 1 0w40 when I change.

E gauge has never shown anything but full, and I don't trust it.

For me this was the first sign of a failing oil sensor. It took maybe a month or so until I started to go from green to red periodically. Scared the hell out of me but didn't want to over fill either. I replaced the sensor and never had an issue again. I really wish there was at least a tube for a dip stick and you could buy one if you wanted. The only way to measure the oil was to drain it and see the sensor was the problem.
