G30 (2017 - Current)
The next generation 5 Series, chassis code G30, arrives at dealers in February 2017. Looking like a scaled down 7 Series and riding on the CLAR platform, the new 5 Series will have a focus on lightweight and sporty performance. Engines options will come from BMW's new B family for the 530 and 540 and a turbocharged V8 for the M550i. Read more about the 2017 5 Series

Headlight lens repair

My 2017 540xi received some sand damage to the plastic headlight lenses. Is there any reason the lenses can't be polished out to improve their appearance (I've done this on earlier BMW's). They aren't too bad, definitely not bad enough to justify spending a couple thousand $$$ each to replace them. However, knowing how everything in the car is connected to the computer these days, I wanted to ask before I mess something up.

I don't see why they can't be polished... But since you live in a sandy area, I really recommend you to buy XPEL headlight protector.. I've used XPEL many times and the headlights looks brand new after many years under the dust storms...

This is another solution, but I don't think this is an original BMW parts, but its worth sharing:

Depends on how deep the scratches are. Beyond a point they can't be properly polished out as the underlying plastic will yellow. Replacement is very expensive but may be required to maintain the value of your car. If it's leased, you will have to pay for it anyway so you may as well do it now.

Based on a collision damage estimate for my 2019 530ex, the cost of a single LH headlight is about $3100. I guess the RH light is the same.

I wouldn't count on it. They know what to look for and they take their time.

Our driver's-side headlight lens is cracked and needs to be replaced. While all the modules still work fine, I was quoted $3800 for the replacement (utilizing the existing lamp modules). Apparently, the headlight lens and body are only available in one piece for about $3,500 (again, no lamp modules).
Seems a bit excessive to me!

The only other option I can think of is purchasing an aftermarket headlight lens for about $120 and I found a shop who would do the work for $490.

Has anyone gone that route and replaced just the lens cover, or have any other ideas?

But you would have nothing to lose by polishing them out now and waiting until they do yellow.
And I'd feel pretty silly if I spent the money on a new one and It got a rock chip or some other damage.

You can search the forums for the previous 2 generations where people have asked and tried replacing just the lens. It doesn't work, the only successful ones were pieced back together with silicone. Try your guy but it will be a gamble.

True, other than the risk of losing the cost of polishing them out if replacement is needed at some point. My point is simply that appraisers are fully aware of the situation and inspect the headlights very carefully for any sign of damage or repairs. The vehicle is devalued by the replacement cost of the assembly in the event that damage is detected. The real problem here is that the lenses are not replaceable and the entire headlight assembly is brutally expensive.
