G30 (2017 - Current)
The next generation 5 Series, chassis code G30, arrives at dealers in February 2017. Looking like a scaled down 7 Series and riding on the CLAR platform, the new 5 Series will have a focus on lightweight and sporty performance. Engines options will come from BMW's new B family for the 530 and 540 and a turbocharged V8 for the M550i. Read more about the 2017 5 Series

BMW Reverses Course on Apple CarPlay

It was announced today that BMW will no longer charge a subscription fee for use of Apple CarPlay. This is a very welcome move as it really seemed like a shameless money-grab when most other manufacturers offer it for free. But I read somewhere that it will only be free to those with the latest version of Connected Drive, which I believe after a period of time also turns into a subscription service.

what I wish is that they would update prior idrives to do fullscreen car play. Yeah I know we can code it in, but I don't want to worry about having to redo the coding (and pay for it again) after the dealer reflashes the software during a service

So I bot a CarPlay subscription renewal last month for my 2019 530e. Does the announcement indicate whether those renewing subscriptions will get a refund?

That question apparently has not been addressed yet. I would speak with your dealer about it.

According to BMW, this is fake news

I just got off the phone with BMW ConnectedDrive folks who told me that this story is not true. They may or may not change their policy on this, but as of today - Dec 5, 2019 - there is still a fee for CarPlay.

Probably taking a while to settle out. Dealer reps are reporting it is already in place on cars taking delivery now.

So just give it time and it will be settled out. They said it would take a few months.

I purchased a new 2020 530xe today, Apple Carplay was free, no subscription fee. The SA said, BMW changed it just a couple days ago.

Why? The whole thread is covering BMW ending charging for CarPlay and making it free in line with the rest of the automotive industry. It likely already works for you, even expired, and if not will work for you in a couple of weeks.

Use the saved money on service or maintenance as BMW isn't letting us actually keep it

It states "All 2019 and 2020 models". I am not sure about older cars.

Yeah, very good point. I had read the poster's signature mentioning they own a 2019 G30, but they may own others outside the announced eligibility window.

Thanks for all the useful information in this thread. I called Connected Drive again and had to be very persistent about demanding a refund on the $80 renewal fee I paid for Carplay on my 2019 530e. The representative made a distinction between Carplay being original equipment versus dealer installed. I dont know if CP can be dealer installed, but my CP is on my original window sticker from the factory. After some extensive back and forth, I am promised a credit card refund for my renewal fee, per the CD representative. I'll let the group know whether that credit hits my card.

My 2019 530e's one-year free CarPlay expires in a month. Last week (before hearing about the news) I logged into BMW Connected portal and saw the $80 renewal option. Luckily I didn't click the button. Just now I logged in again and CarPlay subscription's been updated to "until 01/2039". Cheers.

Within the next 3-6 months and it is due to come to all iDrive 7 vehicles, but it remains to be seen if that includes the iDrive 7 G30 or not.

Interesting...my car is a 2019 540. I have to see if carplay came back as it frickin expired 11/22. When I go into the ConnectedDrive store - it only gives me the option of $300 for 240 months, not the $80/year, which seems odd.

https://gearpatrol.com/2019/12/09/bm...scription-fee/ "One of BMW's stupidest decisions in years is coming to an end. BMW has ended its policy to of charging $80 per year in subscription fees for Apple CarPlay in its new cars and SUVs, according to a statement the carmaker gave to Car and Driver. The change will take effect immediately, BMW said, and is retroactive; any 2019 model year cars that have seen their 12-month free trial of CarPlay lapse already will have the service re-enabled. Starting now, any Bimmer with navigation will offer Apple CarPlay for free in perpetuity."

It'll be free for your car soon. Just wait it out...

BMW said this transition will take into 2020 for existing cars. It has been confirmed for 2019 and newer so you'll get it eventually.

Still waiting for my refund. Get a different answer every time I call BMW Assist. Now being told that no refunds are going to happen. The Trump administration is run better than BMW.

Update: BMW Assist is now saying that "if you renewed for one year for $80, we are unable to offer a refund for Apple Carplay. However, your subscription will be a lifetime extension". (Hardly such a great program given the overwhelming percentage of vehicles leased).

If your initial subscription was active at the time of the announcement by BMW, your lifetime extension is free.

Because my subscription expired in Sept 2019 and I renewed it in Oct 2019, and the announcement on the new program was after Oct 2019, I still have to pay the $80 renewal.

Dumb dumb dumb. Alienating buyers over a stupid $80.

Not so. If your CP subscription expired, you will still have to pay $80 for 20y renewal. You will pay the $300 and then apply for a rebate of $220. Crazy, crazy.
