BMW ZF 8 speed issues
FYI, purchased a 2018 M240i new, and after 6 months the transmission sounded like a bad power steering pump. The whine would get worse with spirited driving and was very annoying. Dealer service acknowledged the noise and starter a PuMA case with BMW NA. I was told this was normal and noting would be done. Contacted Customer relations, a specialist was sent out and again normal. Here is the report:
" 1. Customer states transmission whine in all gears around mid RPM. Whine has gotten worse since last visit. I test drove this vehicle extensively with the shop foreman and we could duplicate the noise the customer was complaining about. When the powertrain was cold, I could not hear the noise, but it became audible as the transmission warmed up. The noise did not appear to be an indication of a defect, it appeared to be a normal operational noise. I scanned the vehicle and there were no relevant faults. I compared the noise to a 340i with the same powertrain and determined that the identical noise was present. Based on my inspection, comparison to a similarly equipped vehicle, and review of the previously submitted PuMA case, I determined that the noise is normal and no repairs are necessary." Anybody looking to purchase a BMW with this ZF 8 speed should be aware of this potential issue as no action will be taken to resolve the problem. This was my first and last BMW and I Hope this helps to inform future potential buyers. |

I never recorded the noise, the dealer did when I brought the car in. Sounded like a power steering pump with low fluid, or a supercharger whine. There are recordings online from other owners that have/had the same noise. BMW was replacing the transmission early on, then decided to cover it up with "characteristic of the vehicle".
