Dye'ing my seats from tan to black

So I thought I would do a diy'ish thread and show you all the progress of the seats. Started about 2pm my time. Prepped, cleaned with TSP, then Acetone and 0000 steel wool. The trick is to use just enough force/acetone/steel wool to remove all the grime and a wee bit of the original color dye, but not so much that you ruin the leather (delicate process). When done, it looks like this.......

Actually, I don't KNOW how to do this (first time) I am just willing to try. This is how I learned almost everything I know about cars. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Hopefully this is one of those "win" times!

I'll hopefully get it all put back together by tomorrow (though I can't sit in them for at LEAST 24 hours) and snap some shots.

Yes. SEM apparently is the best dye around. My local BMW salvage yard does seat restoration and dye'ing with it. I have seen their work and it is good. We'll see how it holds up.

Can you use the same dye on the carpet and everything else? like the dash? and the plastic?
I might do this also if that is the case.... it would be a big project. Something I'd have to do on the weekend and make sure I don't have to drive anywhere. But I'd love to back black interior. I can't stand my tan interior I've ALWAYS wanted a black on black car. My old 7-series was black on black

No, this is leather specific stuff. BUT, duplicolor fabric and vinyl dye is readily available and does wonders on things like your dash, console, seat backs, and carpet. Let's not forget, when I bought my car, it looked like this on the inside......Final after pics are coming tomorrow (well, except for the back seat. I have to wait for that, need $$$)

Why is everyone so worried about this? How do you think BMW get's colors like Imola, Saddle, Sand, Cinnamon, and so forth. I am pretty sure cows don't com in those colors. If I thought for a moment this would rub off, I would not have done it.

Works like a champ. On leather, make sure you use Acetone first with a little steel wool, otherwise it will flake.

Didn't I read that you had done the backs of your seats already? If so, what product did you use to do those?

Great job on this DIY. Lots of good info.

Thanks

I did. I did them with Duplicolor vinyl and fabric dye. Again, prep is key to it lasting a long time. TSP, steel wool, elbow grease, and boom. Done!
