Local independent vs BMW specialty shop

We have a local independent shop that we have been using on our various cars (mostly Japanese) for years. I see people here all the time talking about using specialty BMW/German shops rather than the dealership.

I'd love to hear some of the reasons why I should or shouldn't continue to use my local shop versus a specialty shop.

None of us can tell you if you should go there. You need to go talk to the owner or manager of said establishment and ask them if they are comfortable with repairing the make and model you are considering. I find working on cars is pretty similar when it comes to most repairs regardless of make. I have owned just about everything out there and have maintained them all. My guess is if they can fix Japanese cars German should be no problem.

The nice thing about a shop that does lots of BMWs is they know the common issues, have fixed them a bunch of times and have all the specialty tools to do the job. For example does a non-BMW shop have a walnut blaster? Probably not.

I use an independent BMW shop for my 2001 Z3. They are very knowledgable about my car. I took it to a regular indy garage to ask a question once and their 1st question was "what is this?". I had no confidence from that point. There are several quality shops here in Houston. Good luck.
