Unfortunately, in this case, the 535D that is coming to US is actually the 530D. The original actual 535D (as sold in UK/ Europe) is not being sold in US.

BMW US has decided to badge the European/UK 530D as the 535D is US. Strange but true.

And I really doubt, that BMW will change the exhaust assembly specifically for a model for US.

Also, the configurator now (available at BMWUSA site) is showing the 535D with tailpipes on one side.

Why would BMW make a special image/ configurator and show the wrong image. I mean why show 535D as the badge on the car and then show single side tail pipes.

If you believe that the US site configurator is showing a European car, then the European Car 535D has tailpipes on both sides, but the current image on US site is with single side pipes.

Either way, it seems BMW US configurator has been modified (from what it displayed originally) to now reflect the actual car.

Attachment 388564 - UK site

Attachment 388565 - US site
I believe you if they have changed it. I think it is a mistake to effectively put it on a level with the 528.

Twin tailpipes or one on each side for the US 535d

I guess we just have to wait until a forum owner actually receives a 535d or gets to see a 535d at the dealers...

I contacted BMW customer service about the tailpipe discrepancy on the website and they confirmed the tailpipes are on opposite sides like the 535i.
Mystery solved, I hope.
Here's their response:

Dear BMW Enthusiast:

Thank you for contacting BMW of North America, LLC regarding the 2014 BMW 535d.

The are two exhaust pipes on the BMW 535d, and they are positioned on both sides of the vehicle. We apologize for any confusion our website has caused.

Sincerely,

They changed the pics in the build section of bmwusa.com (except for the 360 view) after I pointed out the discrepancy, so unless they're misinformed across the board (which is always possible), the tailpipes are on opposite sides.

So the US 535d is an EU single turbo 530d engine now upped to 535 nomenclature for US use? No problems here with that. Slightly different power numbers but if BMW is able to match the old M57 which used different sized turbos with only a single turbo now then that's great. Helps keep the cost down. Diesel seems to be taking off a bit in the U.S. but people are still sensitive to the price difference between diesels and petrols here. BMW wants to minimize the "spend money to save money" sort of deal diesels have been and make it more of a no brainer.

No complaints about our X5d. I've driven it and a X5 35i back to back and I definitely prefer the way the diesel moves in local city driving. The torque is amazing, and my wife and I personally both like the sound it makes. It's a very muscular growling sound that's actually pretty sporty. The 35i is noticeably slower in local driving, but makes its extra power known if you keep it matted and are going up to higher speeds. The X5 35i will definitely break past 100 mph faster than the 35d will, all tested on private roads of course. And if your 4 year old son has a pee-pee emergency and you have to pull over to the side of the highway to let him go, and then need to get back onto the highway with traffic moving at 70-80+ with no merge area, the 35i will let you do that with a bit more confidence also, but otherwise I prefer the 35d for 90% of driving situations. Gets way better mileage too. A friend of ours has an X5 35i and constantly complains about how much gas it drinks, but our X5d sips fuel in comparison.

Would worry about 260ish HP with the 530/535d vs the 300hp you get with the Euro-spec 535d. Just put a chip on it if it bothers you that badly. (JBD tune anybody?) Hasn't bothered me at all even in our 5200lb beast X5. The 420 ft-lbs of torque makes it feel light on its feet, and it'll be killer in the far lighter F10 5er.

I've noticed the same exact thing with my wife's X5d when we've gone on trips with it.

Perfect example is comparing my old car, a 2007 Toyota RAV4 V6 4WD, with our 2012 X5d both of which are rated at 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

The RAV4 would do pretty darned good on the highway and I could coax 26 mpg or better out of it if I tried, but as soon as I mixed ANY amount of city traffic in including traffic jams on the highway BAM, trip mileage would drop like a rock. There were times that I was pretty shocked because I didn't think we were tied up for long at all and didn't even do much city driving where I only ended up at around 23 mpg (hand calculating, not using trip computer stuff).

The X5d does way better, by a mile. I don't even have to try and despite the 26 mpg highway ratings I can easily get 28+ out of it on straight highway. And when it comes to city traffic or jams on the highway you can be idling for an hour and it hardly impacts trip mileage at all. Same exact trips and routes including 2-3 hours of city driving and traffic jams I've still averaged 26-27 mpg in our X5d whereas the RAV4 would only do 23ish. Considering the X5 is a far larger and MUCH heavier vehicle that also has a full-time 4WD system, I'm extremely impressed by that. It's amazing.

I did have an E90 335d once for a full week while they were trying to figure out a strange problem I was having with my 335i. I gave that thing a thorough flogging and still managed upper-20 mpg with it despite going well out of my way to cane it every chance I got. I loved that thing! Wanted to see what the M57 was capable of in a 1600 lb lighter RWD chassis. I did get 40 mpg highway on it too. It was amazing! Shame they're not offering the F30 3er in 335d trim, but am happy to see that offering in the F10 5er line.

No problem. It seemed to be an important issue, so I just asked and got quick response as well as BMW updating the pics on the site the same day. It's nice to see good timely customer service.

Depends on the color and which view you choose. Looks like there are still glitches in the configurator (I hope)

Pictures of 535D Xdrive at military sales lot in Germany

Guys, was just lurking on one of the military sales sites here in Germany to see if they had received any F10 LCIs yet and came upon this 535D Xdrive. As you will notice, both exhaust pipes on the same side. Mine is to start production next week at Dingolfing and this does slightly disappoint me.

Again I did not take these photos nor did I see it in person.
