Mein Auto: 2014 535i + 2018 X3 30i
Yeah, maybe non-turbo, non-M older BMW's could run on 89 AKI. My E46 M3 required 91 AKI. At 55-60 MPH, in sixth gear, with the AC on, on a hot day, it'd ping if I tried to accelerate without downshifting first.

so it actually says "MINIMUM" 89

so 89 and higher

also from what I'm seeing on "forums"

Shell VPower 91 octane only.

I'm sure in my manual it only said minimum 89.
and I can't find any "hard" stats for the 128i

I just read a few articles and standards on aviation gasoline. Very interesting. Detonation can destroy an aircraft engine in short order. The pilot has considerable control over detonation. Anti-knock properties of Avgas are standardized, including various octane numbers, and identification dyes.

I wonder why similar controls are not implemented for Mogas. Diesel is a considered technological alternative.

Just put Shell 93 octane in the tank and be done with it. The BMW goddesses will love you for buying this gas.
