Ambient Temp Sensor Help!! ?!?!??!

So my dash is reading the classic -40 due to what I thought was a faulty sensor. I buy a new sensor and go to replace the old one. I drive a RHD 2001 325Ci, when I get to where the sensor should be located I find this:

First of all what I thought would have been an old faulty sensor was not even there but instead this ^^^ was connected to the sensor cord.

So I take this part off that I have found connected and this is what it looks like by itself. It almost looks like its a part used for an Ambient Temp Sensor delete?!?!, however I have no clue. Anyway at this point I just go to plug the sensor straight into the connector cord with obviously the above part out of the way, however the sensor does not fit...

I don’t know at all what this is as all videos I have watched on replacing it are so basic and straight forward... haha

Can anyone please help!!!! Any help at all is appreciated!!!!

Thanks in advance

I would say that it appears to be a holder for the sensor but for another make/model car...someone tried to rigg it...is the car New to you, where you are just finding this out?

Right... I have owned the car for about a year now but the constant beeping from the sensor not working got to me, so I decided to attempt to replace it and I've ended up here... Is that what you mean?

You are on the wrong device. That isn't anything rigged up it is the Oe Thermo switch for the washer system. It is on the right and the ambient air temp sensor is on the left. What you are seeing is #4 here: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=61_1059

The AAT temp sensor hasn't changed for BMW in 20+ years. It looks like #1 in this diagram. https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...89#65816905133
