Roundel column on M54 oil loss

The current (December) Rounded has a nice summary of the M54's problems with oil consumption in Alex McCullocks' column,

He describes the problems quite completely, starting with the "real" problems of the oil rings, Talks about valve guides, CVV, etc.

Well worth the read.

I'm considering switching to a Catch Can. I don't have any real problem with the CCV or the effort to replace it every few years, but I'm looking to cut down on oil consumption.

Is there anyone watching this thread who has had a Catch Can installed for a while ? Have you noticed your oil consumption lessened ? Any other comments on engine performance/fuel mileage ?

Also, what about running a return line from the can to the dipstick tube? We have several months of freezing mornings where I live. I have seen some info where it's a bad idea in cold climates because you'll end up returning water vapor into the crankcase. Is this true ? Again, anyone with experience of this ? If I can't run a return line I don't think I'll do it as I don't want to b emptying a catch can.

I looked into the O2 Pilot mod, since that looks simple and has the same affect on oil consumption as the Catch Can but seems to be only for warm climates.

Pretty well know this car inside out and don't think I ever want to part with it.
