USB Flash Drive & Stereo

I finally just set this up. How I went these past 9 months without setting up the flash drive is beyond me. It's so convenient to have all of my songs available on the iDrive. The best part is it works with the playlists so no longer having to listen to an entire CD (I don't like having to search for desirable songs every 3-4 minutes).

For those curious, I got the SanDisk Cruzer Fit 64GB flash drive. It's tiny (less than an inch long), so has very little chance of breaking due to something pushing up against it. 64GB, at least for me, is PLENTY of music. It's USB 2.0, which is the same as the car.

I did the same thing - moving music to the iDrive system was a pain in the ass, and navigation and useage of it was a PIA too. Bought a 32gb Cruzer Fit as well, and just tossed anything I would want to listen to in the car on it. Love having the album art, and the search/navigation to find the music is so much better than if it was on the car hard drive.

Great to hear, furby! Did you have to reformat the Cruzer drive using NTFS or FAT32, or did it work right out of the box?

Has anyone been successful copying their iTunes library to a flash drive and getting the car to read it? Older iPods don't seem to work, and I'd rather use a flash drive than buy a new iPod touch. My Nano works fine but it is only 16GB.

If you are using MP3s, what did you use to create them?

Thanks!!

Out of the box. The only thing I did was delete the "security" files since they won't be needed.

I don't know if I follow. The playlists were generated in windows media player. I then copied them over (in windows explorer) right to the USB. It's in a folder called Playlists.

So:

e:\playlists\ (both my playlist files)
e is the USB drive assigned for my laptop

Yes this is very easy using a free program called DoubleTwist, takes your iTunes playlists and copies them direct to your USB, then they work perfectly in the car.

Apple products seem to be largely supported with BMW so I imagine you should be able to use it. Let us know if it works, and what you had to do

I have a Mac so all I did was put the flash drive in, open Finder, open Music and then drag the whole iTunes folder to the flash drive. Then I take off what I don't want. Super easy.

I routinely copy songs from my iTunes library on to an USB stick. Just highlight the songs you want, copy and paste into a folder that is already created in the USB stick. I don't need to use any other program, all the song data and album art are automatically copied with the songs.
