2012 M6 vs 2017 M3

Hi Everyone,

I have come to ask for an opinion from those who know best, owners and those who have made similiar decisions in the passed.

I will be able to purchase a new vehicle in the near future, where I have fallen is in the sub 100K (AUD) bracket, allowing me to look at either 2012-13 M6 or a more modern 2017 M3 CP - both used.

For mine, the M6 offers some rarity, and some more road presence, but it is older, with more potential issues and the interior technology is perhaps slightly outdated.

I am wondering if anyone could provide any opinions on their thought processes, or decisions you have made or would make a simliar situation.

I understand a lot of this is of my own personal preference, but its a big decision and I would like to be well informed.

I went through a similar choice 6 months ago and ended up with the M6. I did a drive day yesterday with some //Mates which covered a combination of fast cruising and really tight cornering sections. The weight of the M6 really showed in the tight corners where the M3's were slightly faster; but the M6 pulls away effortlessly on the cruising sections. Personal choice - but I'm still trying to wipe the grin off my face : )

I haven't owned an M4 and an M6. But, I've spent a lot of time flogging both of them on tracks at BMW Advanced M School. A lot of M5 and M6 owners come to those schools. Most of them leave regretting buying the bigger M's. One of the students there was a retired NASCAR Cup driver. NASCAR race cars are humongous. Even he preferred the smaller M's.

///More's right though. It's mindboggling to open up a big M when there's room to do it.

Thanks heaps for the opinions guys. I know this is a personal choice, but I do want to get others opinions when making such an important decision. Time for test-driving for me. As it stands, the aesthetics and presence of the M6 have got me, but the newer technology and slightly more modern cabin in the M3 have me absolutely conflicted. Thank you again!
