I have not received my Race Chip yet, it got lost in shipping. I have a claim in with UPS. Soon as I get it, I will write a review.

How do you know you gain 50hp+? What tool do you use?

I run an older Racechip Ultimate on my 2011 535xi . How is the "GTS Black" supposed to be different?

I have the Racechip Ultimate on my '16 550. Solid product and definitely worth trying. I had it on my previous F10 535 as well. Similar gains on both.

I've had the GTS Black on my 550ix + MSport for a couple months now.

I know many of you will want numbers, but -- I HAVE NOT PUT MY CAR ON A DYNO!! I have no measurements to offer. I only have anecdotal information.

It's a fairly easy install, although the installation instructions from the company leave a LOT to be desired! Even talking with support, they can't tell you where the cables connect. I had to take a light and look around myself. They offer pics of a VW engine compartment, which looks nothing like what's under the BMW bonnet. Be careful removing the plugs, or you'll break the plastic clip that holds the plug in the connector and helps seal against moisture.

Adjustments will take some amount of trial and error. Setting 5 seems to work really well. Settings 6 & 7 cause a lean mixture, so it's best to avoid long term use if you get the same error codes. The symptoms are that it will lack power uphill when the accelerator is mildly engaged. After a few seconds of power loss, you'll get the dreaded Drivetrain Malfunction. On setting 5, the vehicle has a much better pedal response (still not perfect, but it helps a lot) and you do get more power on the top end, too. On setting 5, I don't think I'm getting the additional 78hp, but I wouldn't be surprised to learn I'm getting an additional ~50hp. Driven moderately, you do get slightly better gas mileage. I don't drive moderately. I enjoy my horses working hard, when I need to move through traffic.

I have not tried settings 0-4.

The bypass plug does work.

I'll try to take some pics of my install, and the location of those pesky connectors to plug in to.

Once you install a couple times, it only takes 5 minutes to install with cable ties and remove. I remove mine when I take it to the shop, simply because I don't want any pushback on warranty repair.

Anything I didn't cover? Just ask!

d_stew a couple of quick questions.

1. Was it worth the money to install it?
2. What's your opinion on the dealership being able to tell you had it installed even though you removed it before service? Seems like there's debate on whether they can tell.

Worth is a funny thing, and tends to be relative to your financial situation. It was worth it to me. I have a much nimbler car, and it feels moderately more powerful.

I honestly do not know if a dealer could tell, but I have a couple thoughts. First, let me preface them. I'm not a mechanic, I just understand mechanics. I'm just a journalist who researches everything, both at work and home.

In my particular case, I have an extended warranty, so I don't think they care much about this chip. I only remove it before a dealer visit because it's relatively simple for me to remove and reinstall.

To be able for a dealer to tell, I believe they would need some secret error code getting tripped, which only their reader could see . While I don't doubt this could be done, I think we would all know about it, and it wouldn't serve much of a purpose, other than to purposefully look for any reason to void warranty. BMW doesn't strike me as a company looking to void warranties, simply because someone wants a more power from the drivetrain. I just think they have bigger fish to fry. There are so many other things that have a much bigger effect on engine life, like regular oil changes.

All that said, I could be wrong about all of it

d stew thanks for your input. I just installed the Racechip GTS today and I am trying out different settings. I started with map 7 and I it pulled pretty good mid range. A little bit of lag when I floor it from stop, maybe the ECU is trying to figure things out. Then at mid range the car takes off. I have a 2012 535IX and I could almost swear that the car chirped when I floored it. Something very uncommon for my AWD. So far I'm satisfied with the chip. Thanks for info on map 6 and 7 running lean. I'm just trying to figure out which map gives me the best performance(hp/tq).

Your'e welcome!

It's going to be a much different experience, I would imagine, for you and your 535ix. My car runs lean, but you could experience something entirely different, since mine is a completely different engine.

You'll notice small differences on each setting. I'm still playing with different settings a bit, because some of the differences are subtle. While moving from one map to another, you may not notice much power difference, but you might notice better gas mileage. You'll also notice power differences at higher speeds, as opposed to off the line.

Good luck playing with the settings!

It seems likes it's still almost like the BMS N63 JB Stage 1 in the gains department

I see a Racechip one step up for the 2.0T for about 40HP/TQ on the net. Is is legit or just hoohaa? Just looking for a bit extra ooomph. Nothing exotic.

I can't speak to the accuracy of claims, because I didn't dyno my car, but my butt dyno tells me I have quite a bit more oomph, and I am getting better gas mileage, too. I haven't had a chance to measure over time and conditions (grade, wind speed/direction, temperature), but I have noticed a tank goes a bit further than it did.

The question everyone wants an answer to it, "is it worth it?" For that, I can only say it was worth it to me.

One week with the Racechip GTS on map 7. Definite difference with no issues on my 535ix F10. You will find the ooomph your looking for. I don't dyno but my wife's been complaining more about my driving.

Bwahahahaha! That's all the proof we need. When the little lady starts griping more, you know the chip is working!

Anyone here with one on a 428I? Not sure how good 50HP would be for my stock ride's ability to stay in one piece. I know the motor will be fine, but the rest of the drivetrain? I'll take any answers about any BMW with respect to wear/damage to other parts of the drivetrain. Don't wanna mess this thing up. I'm thinking that this car can easily handle another 50-75HP. Heck, my Camaro handled 125 extra just fine on the stock clutch and differential. Even ran an 11.5 on her with zero issues.

I can't imagine that would put an undue strain on the drivetrain. Now, if we're talking 100hp, I'd begin to make inquiries. Hopefully I'm not foolish here, but I think you'd be well safe to add it.

Good I feel OK with the GTS tune now. I didn't really think it would put my ride in danger, but we can never be too careful with stock rides. I'll go with 5 and see how it works out. Love the power now and going to super love 285. This car is a stud on a 2 turbo. I'm almost, but not quite, starting to lose my faith in 358 cubic inches of V8 love.
