N20/26, "The Noise", who has had it. Couple questions.

So for those who have had the noise which indicated coming timing chain failure how did it begin?

I have had a noise, it is a high pitched whine, rises and falls with rpm. The noise is far more prevalent when cold. I don't have it all the time. I have lots of experience with turbo cars, I have had several of them. I am pretty familiar with turbo whine but I really can't tell. It does not sound like turbo whine, and it also seems more connected to rpm like a timing chain would be and where a turbo would out spool the engine rpm when it got going if you know what I mean.

I have inspected the timing chain a couple times out of concern, but I also really can't tell if it is getting polished edges because it does not seem to show much. Also have been more in the garage with a flashlight and not been able to check it out under bright daylight just yet.

So I guess when you had this noise, was it there all the time at first? Was it only there certain times like in colder weather or when the engine was cold? Did it go away when the engine was warmer? Did it take some time to see evidence on your timing chain or did they both come at the same time?

And for added info....only 45,000 miles, regular oil changes (now at 5,000 mile intervals) and I always leave the ASS on, have only shut it off a couple times. I also am in Minnesota so the car has seen LOTS of cold weather (which automatically disables ASS) but can be harder on a car. And a couple of those winters including the most recent were brutally cold.

Thanks for any feedback.

From what Iíve read, I think itís time for the dealer, so far are 328i has no extra whine. If it was me, Iíd have it towed.

Well I would just drive it over because I only get the whine sometimes and am worried it goes to the dealer and they can't replicate.

Nothing to worry about. Just take it to the dealer and explain that it is intermittent.

I would have the turbo checked out, there are articles of an oiling problem, that would cause the bearings to go. But it doesn't sound turbo related, really have to hear it to make even a tiny bit of sense of it. If it were the guide, that should defiantly be a loud slapping.
