Who makes the best wheels?

i have asked this before, but didn't get many responses. i noticed that on F1 cars, it's either BBS or OZ.

I think you've answered your own question.

Smile umm.....that's complicated, isn't it?

similar to asking: who makes the best golf clubs? since the pro's use FORGED titleist prototypes, does that mean i should buy DCI990s (cast)? or me (amateur) should be buying forged mizuno blades?

for wheels:

cast or forged?

track or street?

single piece or multipiece unit?

how much you gonna spend?

so many choices, it's complicated. track tires need to be light, but will crack/bend/shatter at the first sign of a boston pothole. street tires are looks first, performance second (right?). then, manufacturers make the same design in single piece and multipiece fabrications.

so, at the end of the day, what are you after?

I think Fikse makes the best street wheel available.

excellent points. never thought of it that way. here's my situation: looking toward next winter i need to buy snow tires. I could use the OEM wheels for my new snow tires because the summer tires are wearing out (probably one more season). if i do that then i would buy another set of wheels/tires for the summer. or i could just buy a set of dedicated wheels/snow tires come next winter.

so the new wheels i am looking for are for the street, and yes boston has bad potholes so i am looking for a strong wheel that can resist bending. cost is an issue too, but i am after quality and value more than the lowest price wheel.

I think there's something to be said for technology trickle-down, though. And the fact that a lot of 'premium brand' wheels are actually made by BBS and OZ.

But I did in fact forget Fikse and HRE. Thems are expensive, though, but they're modular so they're rebuildable, which can be cheaper in the long run if you plan on busting em up on a regular basis (about $300 to replace an outer rim vs about a grand for a new wheel, at least for HRE).

cost was an issue for me, too.

kaz is right about trickle down, for sure. the OZ wheels demonstrate this as they're very light.

BBS obviously has two lines: the appearance line and the hi-po line. the BBS RKs i bought for our 325xiT are probably poseur wheels, but they are light and my wife has always wanted those bloody BBS wheels. but BBS also has the new awesome LeMans wheels, the lightweight RC's. the RXs are damn heavy (snowflake wheels).

i bought some used Fikse's for my coupe from a ninja autoXer fella from atlanta. i guess he moved into some superninja lightweight MAG wheels which are so light and fragile they'd crack up on the street. kinesis maybe?

anyhow: i picked up the BBS wheels wickedly cheaply (in boston lingo) in the 16" size. i think they're still only cast, though, and not forged. or some hybrid.

details here:

You mean pissah cheap. Wicked is more of a Maine thing.

The Rx's are heavy? Even the 2 piece? I thought these would be light.....

I wish BBS would make the CH in a 17" myself.

Even the CH is a 18 would be great. I believe 17 and 18 exist; just not one that'll fit a BMW. Until I found these Alpinas (made by BBS), I was gonna get RCs. Couple friends of mine have em, and they're way strong and light. As for RCs, I still have a set of 17s off my old car (need to get rid of em) that are in fact really heavy. I had 3-piece RS (old-skool style) that were super light, and the RXs really slowed the car down.
