Z4 Speedometer & warning light issues

My car (Z4 - 3.0i - 2006) has recently started to have some wierd symptoms - The ABS/brake, Low-tire, check engine indicators followed by the speedometer not working. Car has recently been serviced and checked out fine at BMW certified dealership. Does anyone know what this could be; fuse etc?

Was the battery load tested? Borderline/failing batteries are notorious for causing weird symptoms.

I took the battery in and had it checked - It was only showing 8 Volts and indicated bad cell. The battery was the original one that came in the Z (2006). The stearing doesnt seem to be as easy, the DTC isnt allowing me to activate, ABS light is staying on, the Check engine is staying on and the speedometer isnt working - The tach does though. Very strange!

Im going to check the battery this weekend. I know a low battery affects electrical system as stated earlier but I dont think thats the culprit because when I hooked up GT1 to it It is giving me a code stating "no communication to traction module" and wont let me get into dsc, I ran a self test on the instrument cluster and all gauges moved left and right so I know its not instrument cluster. I also diagnosed all the sensors(wheel speed and steering angle) and they check out fine. If its not the battery I think i will send out the traction module to be rebuilt. Correct me if Im wrong with anything Im saying or suggestions, Thats why Im posting here. ohh by the way the car is a 2006 bmw 3.0i n52 motor

I would encourage you to replace the battery before you do anything. With one bad cell and 8 volts, there is nothing a consumer can do to fix your battery so you are going to have to buy a new one anyways. Since all the gages and sensors are run buy the car's computer, it makes sense they are not working right. Since the computer is not receiving the power it needs to run the systems, I think it is giving you errors. Replace the battery and I bet everything returns back to normal.

This may seem like a stupid question...but do you need to remove the battery to do a load test or similar battery tests?

My 2006 3.0i has the original battery...and would love to check it out prior to running into any of the above issues..if I can do some preventative measures.

Depends on your tester. The last time I has one done at O'reilley they brought the tester to the car and tested the battery in place. If Reilly does it, then Autozone probably does it too. Best of all, it's free.

Is there a feature like in the old E39 high-feature On-Board Computer to unlock it and view what the computer is reading? I've used it to diagnose a dying battery in my 540i. I'm a Z4 noob and probably soon-to-be Z4 owner, so I had to ask.

My '06 Z4 needed a new battery. I was told they frequently fail once they reach 4 years. I only had 27K miles on her and didn't want to take a chance of the battery failing while on the road. Cheap insurance I say.

So did either one of you replace your battery? If so, did it clear up your problems?

My battery checked out fine. The neighbor had a tester..and it showed it is as strong as ever. However, I did this as a precautionary measure...no issues.

I didnt replace the battery I tested it and it checked out, last week I shipped my abs/dsc module to get checked out and rebuilt if necessary and it did have issues. They told me that the module's connections were bad so I gave them the go ahead to fix it for me. I will have it in my hands friday and will update on this thread to let you guys know if that did it.

Smile Fixed!

so after sending out dsc module(abs) the rebuild company I use sent it back to me and still all the lights were on. I hooked up the car to both my scanners and still the same codes and no communication with dsc. I ordered a new module from dealer, popped it in and immediately the check engine, eml, and speedo starting working. Than I had it it coded and programmed. I performed steering angle initialization, and re-activated tire pressure. All is perfect now
