Don't worry. It is a great vehicle. As for the production number not being recognized yet, I found there is generally a three to four day lag with that. If you get really anxious, call BMW customer service, and they can give you a better idea.

Yeah, I saw that. Interesting. However, I saw at the BMW Germany web site that in Germany that costs a thousand euros, so I predict it won't be a cheap option in the USA.

Well glad you got a good one just the same.
Well the wife has to drive it too when she goes shopping, so in truth we never tested the MT. Funny, I was recently thinking that the next BMW we get should be a manual, but both our cars are 08s so it will be a long while.

Earlier this week my BMW dealer told me that the next-generation X3 will go into production in South Carolina in December 2009. If I understood correctly, it will be a 2010 model, but it wouldn't surprise me if it were a 2011 model, since (1) it will be arriving at the dealers early next year after the launch of the 2010 models this fall and (2) by designating it a 2011 model, it would keep the usual BMW schedule of seven model years between generations (the first X3 being a 2004 model that was introduced in the U.S. market in the fall of 2003).

I just read that they are still building the factory and line for the new X3. So you can't roll out a final "for sale" product for at least a couple months after the line is done and the first cars have been built (fast feedback, etc). So it still looks like early to middle 2010 at best. Looks like I will have to consider the Q5. Can't wait for a year for to see if the new X3 is any good.

I checked out the 2010 3 series coupe now up on the "Build your BMW"- Sunroof is now a separte option or part of the Premium Package - is this a new trend with BWM?. The 3 series is still listed s 2009.

Some interesting points:

- automatic is shown as an option which implies the MT will still be available.
- I wonder what automatic will be used from what manufacturer, early reports have mentioned 7-speed.
- I like the sunroof delete option, they just cause trouble IMHO.
- No mention of engine types. The main concern I have about the next-gen X3 is if they use the N54 TT as it is still plagued by fuel pump failures 3 years and 3 redesigns later.
- What's the CO2 stuff?
The sunroof is one of the reasons I bought the X3. I would hate it without all the light coming in!

Part of the reason I didn't buy Japanese. They nickel and dime you with packages.

If you want one feature you need to get four others you don't and end up paying for that.

Sunroof should be standard equipment on all luxury cars. As should Xenons. It's still amazing that they are not and that people will spend 40-50K on a car and get crappy...actually S*itty halogens or be cramped with no sunroof. What next, are we going to regress and make A/C and power steering, brakes, windows, and door locks optional. These are supposed to be premium cars, not entry level Kias.

Before we bought the X3, we looked at the Toyota FJ Cruiser. The way it was built with small windows, large blind spots and NO sunroof option, I hated it. Not to mention the seats were horrible on my back! Same with a Toyota Camry - its seats were rock-hard! Great deal on the end of year left-over, but not comfortable!

I have pretty well given up on buying new. Too much depreciation. I also drive very far for work, so it is not worth it to get new. I just have to search for the best color combo/features I want.

BMW is a luxury car only in NA. We already get tons of standard equipment on US-spec X3s along with the top-spec petrol motor.

Standard luxuries are noted in the ordering guide:
Stuff like Cruise, centre armrest, multi-function steering wheel, automatic headlamps and rain sensor, climate automatic, electric seats, premium interior trim, foglamps, automatic transmission, and BMW Business CD are all upgrades.

It's the "I deserve to have _____ for my money" attitude that limits our BMW model selection in the US. You wonder why BMW won't bring over the X1 and 1er except in top-spec form.

I absolutely agree that many BMW owner have a "I deserve to have _____ for my money" for two reasons. One, they have that attitude about everything. Two, they have that attitude because BMWs are priced higher that virtually any comparable luxury automaker for the same equipment. Let's not debate why or the intangible driving excitement, etc. BMWs "business CD" has to be the worst system I have seen since the early 90's. I still can't see the elapsed time on a CD track...are you kidding me! BMWs come standard with vinyl seats. I could go on and on, but we all know the standard equipment.

If BMW is going to strip down these cars, one, they loose their "prestige/status/premium" reputation, and two, they better price them much lower than they are, IMO. I think we will still order those features, because if we didn't, we'd probably be looking for a lower category or cheaper priced car. And when we do order those features, we're actually going to pay MORE at the end of the day.

That's exactly what's going on. Go configure a comparable Audi A4 2.0T manual Quattro and compare it to a 328xi manual sedan. It's pretty staggering. Premium+Sport+Xenons+Premium Stereo+etc. and the Audi is at $39K while the BMW is at $48K. If I were in the market for a sedan right now, I'd walk into the BMW dealer with comparably spec'd A4 and 328 print outs, and request a serious price accommodation. If they can't meet it, I'd get the Audi. I've had an A4 before and it was a great car. BMW is going to find it very hard to command such a price premium with this kind of competition.
Just my $0.02.

+1. BMW can play whatever pricing games they want. At the end of the day, people are going to price out, like you stated, similar vehicles. The BMW is actually going to be more expensive now because whenever you add options, it's always more than having it standard. To me, the premium pkg and xenons should be standard equipment on all Audis/BMWs/etc because the vast majority of them sold now are. It would actually lower the cost of the vehicle if it was standard.

I'm much more in favor of paying $500 or $1000 less for the car and those options being standard than appeasing the small percentage of the population that doesn't want those options or can't afford them. Actually, maybe that tiny percentage or people would actually get those options if they were standard equipment, thus cheaper!
