where did all the good songs go ?

Man,
tasked with DJ'ing a kids party, not a problem, I have my usual songs
but I usually get a listing of top 20 chart and download them
OMG, I looked at the Canadian top 20, absolute GARBAGE, 90% of the songs
need a clean version, over half you'd only play in a strip club let alone kids
I'd not play ANY at an adults party, I'd get pelted with bottles

What the heck kid's listening to nowadays.

If all else fails, a little bit of Kool and the Gang and James Brown......

LOL, you mean I'm turning into my dad

Ordinarily I would agree with you.

Have been a DJ for.... I don't know how long. Though TBH,
not been doing any B&B stuff, such as weddings barmitz;s etc
more a retro DJ, (as that's the scene I'm into) the odd family party,
but since, car accident, difficult to lug gear around, so I indulge my passion
as a radio host.

But still the last , oh 5-10 years, I've had to get "current" dance stuff in, and for the most part it works, gets the crowd up, but the last few years, the stuff coming out has been bad.
very rarely did you have a "Clean" version, just looked up the top 10, pretty much every track has a clean version.

Was used to that with hip-hop, but mainstream ?

Seems to make it now, you gotta dress like a ****/hooker, wear your pants 10" under your butt, and use a cuss word every other verse.

There are some great bands and great music, but nothing you would see in a top 10 lineup and mainstream, pity that.

But yeah dude maybe your right to an extent

Supertramp, Genesis, the Beatles, the Stones, Yes, Rush, AC/DC, Pink Floyd. Compared to the trash that's around now, it's really a very sad joke.

My parents said the same about Sinatra, Crosby, big bands and even Lawrence Welk.

I remember my dad commenting on how rock and roll would never last as had the music of his generation. When the Rolling Stones first appeared on Ed Sullivan my dad said something like, "It's just a fad and can't last. Can you imagine these guys still performing when they are in their 60's?" I had to agree then that I couldn't, but I also couldn't imagine me in my 70's.

where did all the good songs go ?

In my career in the recording industry I got to work with some excellent musicians and some very financially successful musicians. There were a fair number who were not on both lists.

Pop music evolves and the general rule seems to be that young people think that the music their parents listened to when they were young is very uncool and the parents can't stand the music their kids listen to.

There are channels on satellite radio for the hits of several decades going back to the 50s when I listen to them I am reminded that there was some great music in each decade and there was also a lot of lame crap.

"Hey Nineteen
That's 'Retha Franklin
She don't remember the Queen of Soul
It's hard times befallen
The sole survivors
She thinks I'm crazy
But I'm just growing old"

Steely Dan

"Nineteen" is now in her 60s and wonders why her 19 year granddaughter does not remember Cyndi Lauper, Van Halen or Lionel Richie or Steely Dan.
They think she's crazy but she's just growing old.

There are a few current/young acts that I think have immense talent, but there will never be another Close to the Edge coming from any of them..

By "need a clean version" do you mean language? Or sound quality?

Reminds me of when I moved to the US at age 16 and spent a week wondering why all the songs sounded different.

I hate, hate, hate finding a new song, loving it and then hearing it on the gardio - groovin' to it only to go "wait, that's not how it goes!"

yup

I can't quote exacts, but for radio (at least commercial) songs had to be a certain length or at least not longer than some limit, due to having to play a certain amount of songs and have ad breaks (sponsor messages) I think it was about 2.30 mins, most rock&roll songs (50's) generally run around that. Also from a dance POV, you wanna be able to change partners and not knacker yourself dancing to a fast song for longer than 2 1/2 minutes, its a dance, not a workout

More recently many artists where asked to cut down song length, for eample Bohemian Rhapsody, was deemed too long, but Freddy declined on any cuts

Also Ray Charles had to cut/re-edit "What I Say" pt1 and pt.2

There were a number of top 100 hits over the years that were much longer than 2 and 1/2 minutes long.

The Longest Hot 100 Hits
(9:57) "Blackstar," David Bowie, No. 78 peak, 2016
(9:30) "Better Place to Be (Parts 1 & 2)," Harry Chapin, No. 86, 1976
(8:55) "November Rain," Guns N' Roses, No. 3, 1992
(8:37) "American Pie (Parts I & II)," Don McLean, No. 1 (four weeks), 1972
(8:16) "Untitled 07 L Levitate," Kendrick Lamar, No. 90, 2016

During the disco era of the 1980s there were extended versions of songs that were intended for DJs to play at dance clubs but were readily available to the general public.. These extended versions were usually released as 12" singles that were at either 33 or 45RPM. These extended play singles were 7 or 8 minutes or longer versions of the singles that were released for radio play although it was not unusual for stations to play the extended versions.

These "Dance Mixes" were created by taking the original multi-track tape and mixing various combinations of the instruments and vocals, sometime just percussion, sometimes bass, drums, keyboards and background vocals, etc. and then splicing portions of those mixes together to form the extended version. In those days the editing was done by cutting the tape with a razor blade and splicing it back together. Sometimes additional instruments were added to the original tracks. These mixes were generally done by club DJS and in many cases, if the record was a hit, there were several versions from various DJs.

Here is an example of the radio mix and a dance mix of George Benson's Give Me The Night.

Growing up in the '60s and '70s, I say they are the best. Yesterday, I pull out the top 300 songs on CDs my daughter made for me a long time ago. I sampled them in my car in the garage, alone. I love them, the Beatles, Temptations, aretha franklin, elton john, jimi hendrix, eagles, temptation, diana ross, joan baez, four tops, simon and garfunkel, beach boys, Led Zeppelin, bob dylan, just to name a few. Most of the songs during that period were relationship and girl friends-wanting one or losing one. Love, rejections, disappointments, failures, loneliness, and sadness were the lyrics. Yes, the drug scenes in Jefferson Airplane White Rabbit and Iron Butterfly In a gadda da vida, that lasted slightly over 17 minutes long. No one used a gun to resolved their problems back then. They used drugs. They listen to the music. eleanor rigby was sad nobody that nobody came to her funeral, in the year 2525 devastation of the human race, don mclean bye bye american pie, Born To Be Wild-Steppenwolf, and can aretha franklin sing! Today, we get hip hop with heavy metal and rap metal, all about killing, bullet in the head, undead, bomb, and murder. The sign of the time.

I have very eclectic taste in music. I have been exposed to a lot of music in my life and I was a record producer and I studied at the Eastman School of Music. I worked with some of the best musicians and some of the most successful in terms of record sales. Some were on both lists, and many were not.

My record collection includes The Beatles, Miles Davis, The Juliard String Quartet, Leonard Bernstein, Little Feat, Jeff Beck, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, The Cleveland Symphony, Dave Brubeck, Oscar Peterson, and many others.

What have I learned form all this. Enemem, Kanye West and their ilk are not musicians, They may be entertainers but they are not musicians. If they are musicians then the fry cook at McDonalds is a chef.

Here are videos of two of the people I worked with. The Fat Boys and Kenny Kirkland. I think it is obvious who is a musician.
