My M3 ED - late report.

Prelude

Once upon a time, there are 3 festers planning to pick up M3 together at the Welt. They are Furby, Bemo and myself . We really believe this will be just another ED but we are wrong because of " M car allocation". We started planning in the early Fall of 2015 but we aren't able to get anywhere until late Spring of 2016. This allocation system is very painful and it forces us to take shotgun approach to hunt for available M3 slots. We have contacted close to 30 dealerships prior to securing production #s. The experience got so frustrated , Bemo jumped ship and ended up with a beautiful 2016 Porsche 911 GTS. I'm trying to pull him back from the dark side to do next BMW ED 3 years from now. We will see...

During the allocation hunting process, we get to know another fester - Turpiwa who is a Houstonian like myself . He is also in the process of securing a M3 ED.The whole allocation searching process is opaque and lack of useful info for buyers. I sincerely hope BMW will someday do away with allocation program in lieu of a central ordering system. Loyal owners such as us ( repeat multiple prior and current BMW owners ) shall have the right to call BMWNA and be informed of which dealer has the allocation and quantity . This will at least give us an idea who to approach.

The best part of this unfriendly buying process is the bond and friendship formed with Bemo, Furby and Turpiwa. It is hard to believe but I manage to meet and share a few beers with everyone of them . We still text each other frequently .

My big break was getting in touch with an excellent CA . The stuff that he did was legendary - he secured my production # in mid-March for August 2016 pick up. The production# was issued to me a few hours after we agree on the deal. That is 5 months advance locked-in production slot. I eventually have to modify my Munich pick up date a month earlier to July 8th 2016. Needless to say, he made that happened as well.

July 7th 2016

We are at the Welt doing our BMW Museum tour and dropping my kids off at Junior Camp. I want to thank ED department and Welt for accommodating my schedule by allowing my kids to attend Welt Junior Campus a day prior to my delivery .

I promise Tim to re-fill bimmerfest sticker .

My so-so Renault parked next to BMW powered Morgan at Welt's underground garage

There are a lot of 2 series minivans being delivered that day

The concept car section is new to us ( I don't remember it on last ED trip)

The delivery day !

It is hilarious but true. BMW dispatch a MB van to pick us up . We appreciate it.

The lounge is same old 1st class. The pick up process is different than my prior experience. The car is being delivered without Zoll plate. They said the customs officer had my plates so the car was delivered to me followed by paper signing 2 hours later.

The plates aren't on the car .

BMW provided full tank of petrol this time and also an USB stick which was plugged into the car to provide navigation while in Europe.

FYI, WAZE works in Germany.

I have no complaint on the car . It has plenty of torque and exhaust sounds beautiful under Sport Plus. I also like the fact it comes with regular wheels ( not run-flat).

I just found out my car is clearing US Customs today. The dropped off date at Frankfurt was on July 20th. I like new BLG facility at Frankfurt. It has huge fully paved lot for returning vehicles.

It only took 3 weeks to cross the pond.

Below is at Frankfurt drop off point- BLG Logistics :

Very well done. We picked up my wife's M2 4 days after you and the car just landed at the VPC in Georgia today (came over on the Orion Highway). UNFORTUNATELY, it is being held there due to the differential defect for an undetermined amount of time. The wait is a killer.... this is even worst. Sounds like your M3 dodged the bullet.

Chuck , congrats on your M2.

My car is also on Orion Highway which is a brand new speedy RORO car carrier just entering service in 2016 . We are very fortunate to be able to enjoy our M car in its motherland & on autobahn. There are plenty of miserable festers whom aren't so lucky and have to stick with loaners.

I will be very lucky to dodge that bullet. In fact, I'm very sure it is part of that rear-diff / stop delivery because of an event took place on July 15th while driving to Strasbourg .

Below is group conversation dated July 15th between myself , Furby & Bemo ( 5 days prior to drop-off and 3 days before BMW AG issued Delivery Stop Bulletin ) :

Congrats on the car and trip to Deutschland. You worked hard for this to happen!

I don't think that this is will be your last delivery. More to come.

Thanks guys, I'm hoping to see all of you doing an European Delivery in the future. Hopefully, we can all get together in 2019.

BTW, customer relation just informed my car is part of the rear diff recall today.

Headed to Germany this weekend to take delivery of my M3 - Question - How do they affix the front plate to the bumper? Live in a non-front plate state and hoping for magnets or similar!
