Starter replacement?

Hi
My 2007 525xi has no crank on ignition, AAA helped me get home and they said battery tests fine so am looking for advice - is my next step to just replace the starter?

Cars been great, have 105k on it, recently had brakes and transmission fluids done, water pump and new plugs, this is first breakdown.

And if so is it a major job, or could I tackle it myself?

Thanks

You can easily DIY but you will need to remove the intake manifold, etc to get to it. Make sure you have all the parts required before tackling the job, including, gasket parts and crankcase breather tubes which tend to break.......

Thanks, I am looking at Pelican site now for parts, planning on a Bosch starter. Any other maintenance I should tackle while am at it?

Quick/free/easy test is to unplug the IBS connector, small two-pin blue connector wired to the battery ground terminal. Don't do the yellow BST connector on the red battery terminal. A broken IBS can eventually annoy the car into not even trying to crank. Been there done that.

Thanks will take a look at that now, what should I expect to occur once disconnected? That the starter should then get current to crank over?

If disconnecting IBS works and the car starts, then you're fine. I left mine broken and unhooked for months before the weather warmed up and I replaced it.

If it doesn't change anything and car still won't start, oh well, no harm done and you ruled out a possible cause of your problem.

Does your engine have DISA flaps? If so, you could examine them when the manifold is off, since the inboard one can only be accessed with it removed. Also, give the oil separator a good cleaning. Also only accessible with the manifold off.
