Mad at myself for not getting back up camera...can I add it?

Hello All,

So I ordered a AH3 which I love. I made the mistake of not getting it with the back up camera and I miss having it. Can this be added by the dealer?

Jason

Please contact forum vendor BimmerTech for the OEM rear camera retrofit. It is not available at the dealer.

Can't you just look back over your shoulder, like the rest of us? You need a camera instead?

Back up camera is useless. I'd rather the senors instead. Look over your shoulders and sound is best.

Use the muscles in your neck and turn your head...I understand having a backup camera in a SUV, but a car?? Waste of money...

I love the backup camera and for me it's essential. I have a very tight single garage with only 3 inches clearance on the each side with mirrors out. It allows me to back in and get close enough to the rear of the garage so I can can close the door.

I don't park forwards in the garage because that particular side is concrete and the other is drywall which is less damaging if I bang the door.

My previous car was broken into in my driveway so I keep this one safe in the garage.

Disagree. If you've ever had neck issues or neck surgery a backup camera is extremely helpful.

I got the PDC and the rear camera instead of xenons and couldn't be happier because its more useful to me and cool as hell to use, especially when parking in close quarters. OP, i'd investigate the bimmertech solution.

IMO, PDC and the Rear camera should be standard on every BMW, because in the case of the rear camera, this is something that could potentially save lives, especially if a little child or animal wanders behind your car. For me, the camera is my favorite option.

Wasn't there a law coming by NHTSA that all cars by end 2014 should have a backup camera? I maybe wrong.

It's coming. It will be required in all vehicles.

I am on my third car with a backup camera and I will NEVER purchase another car without it! Same thing for Xenons, indispensable safety item!

It's a saver in parking lots where people walk fast and close to the parked cars. The other two cars we had with backup cameras were Lexus. The cameras where mounted closer to the end of the rear window. The 328i camera is mounted at the end of the body. With the BMW, you can see a wider angle, much better than the Lexus installation. Especially whenever you are parked next to a high vehicle such as a full-sized SUV or pick-up truck!

If and when they become mandatory, I hope it will be similar to the Volvo where it will stop the car when backing up, therefore, saving someone from getting runed-over, especially little kids.

Do you guys see anything in jsimons post where he is asking for your opinion on backup cameras?

No?

Neither do I.

Thanks @keepittrill. I don't have a back up camera on my weekend car and I'm pretty good at looking over my shoulder thanks!!! In fact you would not believe the space I back it into my garage. BUT the AH3 is my daily driver, always in and out of lots, parallel parking and it's nice to have. So that's why I'm looking to see if it can be added.

I assume all of you nay sayers never use cruise control hu? Are you too lazy to press the peddle with your foot? None of you got premium package because it's lazy to have to turn a key in a door. And I'm sure you all got really pissed when they discontinued roll down windows. #getoffyourhighhorse

I've got you, dude!

And here, this may help. They aren't OEM, but they should be cheaper.

I never use cruise control because I feel it keeps me more alert when driving long distances.

Has anyone installed the BimmerTech backup cam? I too find myself in the situation where when I ordered the car, said "I can turn around, I learned to parallel park on an Olds Cutlass Supreme". "But now when I hear my wife say, "how come that Civic has a backup cam and you don't?", I think otherwise.

Any warranty issues, and was it hard to install?

Thanks

No warranty issue so far, I even had my car's software updated by the dealer and the camera works after the update.

The installation is pretty straight forward, they sent the kit with all necessary parts and instructions.

But I was lazy and have one of his installer in NJ to put it in.
