Convertible top not retracting

Hey folks, I have a fresh quandary with my 6. The top will not retract and a message says the retractable top isnt locked. After some initial detective work there is no mechanical problem, which leaves electrical , possible sensor or switch somewhere. Anyone have this sort of thing happen before? Love the car...

Since you have a 2012...its at least 8 years old. Have you checked the convertible top's hydraulic oil level?

And no...I'm not joking (I know some are probably thinking I'm kidding...like when "blinker fluid" is mentioned when owners question why they have fast flashing when the turn indicators are initiated)...but the convertible top actually has a hydraulic fluid reservoir and you can check the level. If it is low...it could impeded the operation of the soft top.

See info below:
The TIS recommends putting the soft top in the SERVICE POSITION: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...e-top/F91iPYS0

Fully open soft top compartment lid (1) as shown.

Removing hydraulic cylinder at top right or left as follows

This then allows you to check the fluid level: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...e-top/F34W6w6A

Oil level must be within the arrow (2) if the hydraulic unit is horizontal.

Undo oil filler plug (1).

Fill required oil quantity from the oil bottle or draw off using suitable auxiliary materials.

+1 on the hydraulic fluid, many do not know this needs topping up and BMW never service this item. It does take a long time for the fluid to drop, had the same issue on a Mercedes, I have a litre bottle of the Mercedes oil and used a a small amount to fill the reservoir, it is also important not to overfill, there is a procedure for doing the fill you will need to follow it if this is your issue.
The F12 convertible roof is far more reliable than the previous 6 series.
There is a thread on here where someone had the same issue and it turned out to be one of the sensors????

In fact it turned out to be a sensor, I'm told that it somehow got triggered into a fail safe mode and had to be reset. Good to know ! Thanks for all the tips guys, looking forward to driving it !

+1 on the oil though. Mine started having more and more frequent issues putting the top down, especially first thing in the morning. Checked the oil first thing in the morning the past Saturday and found that it was well below the minimum mark on the reservoir.

I extracted all the oil from the reservoir and replaced with clean new oil. The old oil was soiled. Raised and lowered the roof a couple of times to bleed the system and the roof is faster and quieter now.

Your car looks like mines twin (down to the wheels lol) and is the same age so maybe check the oil anyway. The rear window needs to be up at the same time as the roof fins and the convertible deck, and its a bit of a trick to raise. You do it with one of the special tools in the rear bench storage area. Have a look here: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...e-top/KMa5mjTU

The Convertible Top Not Retracting

Hi All! Hope you are safe.

kmac799 - I have the same car and after I let the battery drain (bad!!!), the rooftop started to cause some problems and was not able to close it back up, I reset it and was able to complete the task. Did you bring the car to a BMW service dealer?

The obvious = read the manual

I went to golf course and couldn't get top to go back up. Kept getting error msg on control panel. Drove home and reading all these posts on why it wouldn't go up and why I kept getting these error msgs. Was scared I was looking at sensor replacement, $700-1000, etc. Or how to re-initialize, etc

I had already popped the trunk(to get clubs out). When the trunk is ajar, the top won't function. What a knucklehead? Oh well, live and learn.

I've only had this car a month and is my first BMW at 55. I had Mustang convertibles for long time, but this is much more engineered vehicle.

Love the car, the 450 hp is scary; still learning how to drive it.

I had to have mine reset , it's a process that a good bmw tech can do. Shouldnt require parts.

Hi, kmac799; mine is a 2015 F12 going thru a similar electronic issue, except code is saying there is fault with rear passenger side power window.... yet mechanically it works perfectly. Very curious how u found which sensor was at fault and its location. Thanks
