The Joy of Driving an X1

This is a different kind of a thread. A lot of times it is easy to read through the forums, follow the details closely, and get kind of depressed about minor things that really don't affect overall enjoyment very much. For example - it is easy for me to stress about whether I should have gotten the M Sport suspension or servotronic or paddle shifters. This is the danger of forums.

For this thread, I wanted to share a more positive story - my first all-out driving fun after the break-in period. I followed the break-in period relatively closely but this last weekend I hit the 1,200 mile threshold simultaneous with a 50 mile drive home from an event. Rather than take the freeway the entire drive, I decided to take some back roads for the last 30 miles. The roads in my area of PA can be very fun to drive IF there are no cars blocking the way - pretty windy with some nice hills.

The timing of this could not have been more perfect. About 8:30 or so on a Saturday evening and the road was relatively free of cars. When I did meet the occasional group of cars, the timing was fortuitous - in a passing area where I could zip around them by aggressively accelerating.

I had an absolute blast driving home. I really pushed the car around corners and felt free to open up it up at times. I could not have been happier. The cornering was incredible - even with the stock run flats and a no-line 28i xdrive. Bottom line - there is no other car that I wish I was driving right now. What an incredible experience.

This car is meant to be driven. Enjoy it.

Amen to that!

I can't wait to take the X1 on its first real road trip. I might just have to take some holiday time early this summer!

Nice post! I love the cornering on the X1. Did you leave traction control on? I find that sometimes it interferes with cornering a little too early. At least on our rear drive 28s. When it's switched off the control feels better.. I love having the option of turning it off!

The UltimateDrive app provides a great database of driver's roads, in your own backyard. It is one of my favorite social media apps.

Gotta agree, I hit 1500 miles over the weekend and have been a little more aggressive since. I was on my way home today and wanted to get around a few cars on the turnpike in south fla. I popped over to SD and tapped in... Soo smooth and fast!!! Much faster and more refined than my Countryman S...

The thought never even crossed my mind! Boy I wish I would have thought of that. Not sure how much impact it would have on cornering in an xdrive though since you can't turn off the xdrive. Next time for sure!

Now that is just plain Awesome Sauce! I did not know about that app. It is now installed and there are several recommended routes in my very back yard. I know of a few more I will add. What a great app.

I love this little car! It handles like nothing else I've ever driven, which has been all domestic cars. My Summer car is my 2006 Mustang GT, mostly for car shows with the X1 being my daily. I have to say, I'm not driving my Stang much! No comparison! The X1 is as fast as my first mustang GT in 2003.

Well I'm still early on in the break-in period but I'm getting more comfortable with it and feeling it out a little. I'm very pleased to be feeling what I consider to be the signature handling of BMWs in this X1. It's heavy and solid feeling but still very nimble somehow and it sticks in corners without a single complaint. Definitely enjoying the M Sport suspension - the body roll is well under control despite the ride height. I drive mostly in manual mode with the paddles and I'm really enjoying the transmission. There is a half second before the shift executes but the shift itself is very fast, and I can easily integrate the the half second into my driving. Just have to remember: It's probably still faster than I could shift a manual unless I was REALLY focused. I can't wait until I can open up the throttle!

Let's hear it for the little things: The footrest is nice and wide. The window controls have a clearly defined resistance point making it easy to choose between manual down and auto down. The LED running lights are awesome. The turning circle feels much smaller than the specs suggest.

Definitely. I'm good and comfortable with it now and I love how well positioned and easy to use the controls are. I just took a 200 mile round trip to get some miles on the clock and to start scouting a route I'm going to lead in a Miata drive to Lime Rock Park. The X1 took the hill, curved back roads really nicely. It'll be more fun in the Miata, of course, since those roads were made for that car, but it was still nice in the X! The 200 miles flew by like nothing.

Picked my orange m sport out of state and drove it home yesterday. I hit a major thunderstorm and left my wife driving a 4-matic mercedes in the dust. She said she was losing control in the rain and had to slow down. The X1 X drive was tight to the road the whole way. I am now sold on it more than ever.

Followed my wife driving the X1 on a an hour drive home yesterday, and got to look at the car driving from a lot of different angles with other cars around to compare... There really is nothing on the road like it, the rear wheel stance is aggressive, and the lines of the car just look phenomenal out on the road...

We've had an abnormal amount of rain in the 17 days I've had my X1, and I've noticed it's exceptionally stable.

+1. I drove it through buckets of rain and was impressed by how stable it felt, even with the stock all seasons.
